About 2 months ago my wife and I returned from our 2nd gold prospecting trip to WA both times doing the full circuit.trouble free except for a hole in the fuel line from the tank which we fixed in Katherine. We found enough gold both times to make a decision to more or less do this full time-hence a dilemma. My disco 2a td5 is running great but I started to worry about the high mileage, about 295000 at the time.I procrastinated about selling it or not, but decided to do one more lap around oz and shelled out $1200 for a new set of BFG ko2 tyres. THE VERY NEXT DAY I was scooting along a country road near home and a large hare launched its self into the front of the disco, it smashed the plastic bumper, completely demolished the grill and put a couple of small gouges in the a/c condenser. I fitted some grill mesh to the front and did a trip to NQ. On return the insurance co has agreed to pay me the amount of the repair bill so I am back to whether I sell or not. The disco has now done just over 300000,and is running like a dream but not worth much. I have decided to sell and will list on the market site soon---all because of a hare,
John

Well I have had no luck in selling so I am going to keep it.I have bought a 2003 2a v8 auto off my son (he is no longer using it) and I am going to swap over his bull bar, winch, snorkel, steps etc and either wreck or sell the still very drivable and registered v8 cheap. It is fitted with a uni-chip and goes like the clappers. I will list it as soon as i have swapped the bits.

John, that's a great plan. At least you know your vehicle and what has been done to it. May you have many more years of happy motoring! Oh, and try to avoid the suicidal wildlife.
...says the man who on his last big trip nearly cleaned up an emu, camel, bull, several kangaroos and a couple of wild horses at various times..... :D

I'd be interested in hearing more about the prospecting and how you might start.

My Disco has done 365,000 kms. But to be fair I rebuilt the engine at 280,000 kms. The only reason I needed to do this is because the engine got dust in it.
My advice would be fit the snorkel and ensure the sealing and filtering is top notch.
Have the auto assessed by an auto specialist, not a mechanic.
Assuming your TD5 is an auto I'd keep the Auto from the V8. Your Auto will be getting a bit tired at 300,000 kms. They are not a direct swap as they have different output shafts and torque converters. But the auto specialist may thank you for keeping it, at least until they have given your auto the all clear. My auto specialist made one good box from a TD5 and V8 auto. Apparently they wear slightly differently, i think the TD5 is harsher on the input or something.
That way you can be sure the car is mechanically sound and be more confident doing those kms.
