View Full Version : Max tyre width on 17x7.5" rim?

Hi all. Im looking to get a set of 17x7.5" X5 rims for my D3. Just wondering what the max width i can go on the rim? I hear 235 works so could run a 235/75R17, but I'd like a little more rubber on the road. Would a 255 still fit?

Cheers

Should handle a 265 with ease and most 275s

Log onto a tyre web site and looks for a tyre size - each brand is reasonably consistent - they will specify wheel width suitability.

I have steel rims 17 x 7 and run 265 65 17 D697 with no worries at all.

I used both LT245/70 and 265/65 on 7.5" X5 rims. I still have 4 part worn LT245/70 Duractracs on X5 rims needing a home.

I'm partial to Bridgestone Dueler AT D697.
Pity there's no 19"

How worn are they? And whereabouts are you based?

I'd love to just steal your wheels Rich, but i think A/T's will be the go. Currently looking at the Bridgestone D697 for their durability and many great reviews, and the BFG A/T KO2 for something a little more aggressive. We have a lot of clay around home and i would like something that performs well in that goop. Price will probably win out tho [emoji14]

Dan, if you get 17's and therefore have two sets of wheels, wouldn't you put AT's on the current wheels and MT's on the 17's for the clay etc?

Nah for two reasons. A) i cant be bothered swapping them over and B) i cant afford 2 sets of tyres at the moment. Maybe later on I'll do it tho.

The AT looks quite similar to the D697. And they are about the same price. Are the Monsta LT rated?

I am interested in an Australian tyre tho. I dont have to buy tyres for a few months so keen to hear what you think of them.

Thanks Drizzle. I was looking for the twin spoke rims but the single 5 spokes look great on yours. Did you need different wheel nuts or do the stock ones fit?

Can anyone explain why there is two different load ratings for the same tyre?

https://www.tyresales.com.au/buy/tyre/bridgestone/dueler_a-t_d697/265-65r17/114816?q=4

https://www.tyresales.com.au/buy/tyre/bridgestone/dueler_a-t_d697/265-65r17/125110?q=4

Obviously I don't want to pay $50 per tyre if I don't have to...

The Bridgestone website says only the 116S tyre is available
Dueler A/T D697 and D697 LT Tyres - Bridgestone Australia (http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyre-treads/d697.aspx)

There is the same issue in the 265/70 KO2's, though the tyres are rated 121S and 112S and the 121S is cheaper...

So am I right in assuming that the more expensive one is the LT version?

Thanks for the heads up on the Monsta tyres. I have been thinking 17" tyres are the way to go, not only because of the increased sidewall, but also the fact that tyres are generally much cheaper for 17's. Looking at the Monsta prices through Ozzy the 18's are the cheapest option when accounting for the cost of rims. So i might give them a go if the prices are similar when I need to buy. :)

You will need longer shank nuts. I used these as recommended by Graeme:

Did you ever get around to trialling these? If so how did they go?

I am looking at 18" options for when the GOE rims arrive.

Nah i didnt go the Monsta. Ended up getting four D697s in 265/65/17 for $920 fitted and balanced.

The Monsta ATs are new and while they look good (the tread pattern looks like a more aggressive pirelli scorpion AT), i wasn't keen on being one of the first with them. Plenty of happy D697 owners and they ended up being cheaper. From what I can tell the Monstas are aussie designed but made O/S.

I ran Khumo KL78 265/70/17s on my X5 rims with no issues and our D4 has rear air, no rubbing issues at all, I actually still have 4 X5 rims in the shed gathering dust.

Yeah if you go that way let us know how they go. I haven't heard anything bad, and as they're tread pattern is similar to the pirelli scorpion it should perform ok. Hopefully the construction is a bit tougher.

Unfortunately not likely to happen now, just got a quote for D697s 235 each including fitting, etc. Plus $100 cash back if you buy four or more. Means 1075 for 5.
Offer lasts to 25 Feb, I will buy even if I don't have the rims yet.
Monsta from Ozzytyres came in at 272 each

Maybe another time

That is very good value for D697s and way better than what I found when looking last year.

EDIT: although if that's for 17s then it probably makes sense because I was looking at 18s.

Geez mike that is a great price.

Every other name brand tyre I was looking at was around $350+ for 18's. I cant see any other all terrain being worth the extra!

Yes the price is very good, seems Bridgestone are having a bit of a promotion. The quote is from Bridgestone themselves.
Best I could find other than that was 299 each and the worst I bothered recording was around 390. I am pretty sure that I saw someone with them fro well over 400 but I didn't bother putting that in my spreadsheet.
The amount of difference in price between shops for the same tyre is incredible - about a $200 spread for the D697s this time.
But every time I am in the market I run up a spreadsheet to record quotes and there is always a big spread. Doesn't matter what brand. There must be some good margins out there

Reviving this thread because the new 18" rims are being delivered tomorrow. I missed out on the D697s at $235 each, now $310.
But Monsta ATs are $190 each from Tempe Tyres, that's $950 for the five. Looks like I maybe the Monsta guinea pig. [bigsmile] I will decide in the next day or so, if I go Monsta, I will let you all know how they go.
