I know there are many threads on oil for the Puma, lots of opinions, but I'm trying to narrow it down between 2 engine oils, is Penrite HPR 5 5w-40 (full synthetic) better than Penrite HPR diesel 5 5w-40 (semi synthetic)?
on the face of it i would assume the full synthetic would be better - its also more expensive, but i remember a member on here (mechanic i think) said he recommends the diesel version.
does anyone know what the difference is?

reason I'm asking is because the HPR 5 is on sale

There are a whole bunch of numbers for the right oil (which I can't remember). I seem to remember there may actually be a difference for colder and hotter climates. I wouldn't muck around with 'near enough is good enough'. Your manual or the Penrite site should give the right numbers.
Penrite recommends the HPR 5 full synthetic.

I found the Penrite full synthetic 5-30 (meets the specs) that comes in 6l and 1l bottles to be a great oil. Engine runs very well on it. I know it's not what you asked but it's Penrite and another option. Cheers.

If you look through some of my posts (and others) you will find this has been discussed quite a lot...

I use on all Defenders Penrite HPR DIESEL 5 5W-40 semi synthetic engine oil. Not because I get some super dooper deal with Penrite, just IMHO I believe it offers a very good level of protection without being too good at what it does, in engines that really are only mid range tech and do very little work.

Just some observations..
I've had numerous customers vehicles in that either blow a little blue smoke on start up or once warm if left sitting on idle again start to blow a little blue smoke. Often they have had a life of "full synthetic" engine oils, changed over to a semi synthetic (namely the Penrite one as listed) and within a few hundred km's or well before the next service is due, and they have stopped blowing blue smoke. Normal engine break in and wear is an important part and normal function of an engine, as is oil consumption. Most half modern diesel engines in light vehicles produce huge amounts of torque and arent worked hard, a diesel engine loves to be worked.

My other "gripe" i have is the use of "full synthetic" which is a play on words, its simply a mineral based oil, dont be fooled to believe otherwise.

An actual "full synthetic" engine oil will be labeled "PAO" and or "ESTER" 100% PAO ESTER Full Synthetic (http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products-categs.php?id_categ=1&id_base_oil=1)

anything else is a big oil con....

I have been using HPR 5-40 diesel for the last 100,000 km with no issues,
Diesel oil contains higher levels of detergent which keeps the internals of the engine cleaner than non-diesel oil, it keeps the carbon particles suspended in the oil....that is removed during the next oil change....thus why diesel oil gets black when in service.
If you have used diesel oil in petrol engines from net, you will have a nice clean engine, don't use diesel oil in older engines as it will wash all the carbon away from the rings and you will end up with lots of blue smoke.

I use HPR 5-40 Diesel as a multi fleet oil for my Defender and motorcycles.
