Hi guys,

so i have a strange noise which sounds like it is coming from my rear tail shaft. I have provided a video and you can hear the clunk noise. It only happens when taking off and occasionally when i go off the throttle at low speed and get back on it. Its like a clonk/clunk noise but tinny rather than a thud.

My car is a 2013 110. Has a rear e-locker, rear maxi axles and flanges, the front has flanges to and rides on 33's. The e-locker was installed at Opposite lock and when i got them to look at it they actually stripped my diff down to confirm the backlash was done correctly and everything is set up perfect. There is virtually no play in regards to diff backlash or axle's. You may notice the tail shaft was being rubbed by an exhaust mount at one stage but i have rectified this.

I suspect it could be a uni joint but there is hardly any play in any of them...any ideas are welcome.

Noise will travel. Check the gearbox mount bolts to see if they are loose.

Also check the 'A' frame bushes and Ball Joint - symptoms indicate that rear axle has rotational play. Unlikely, but not unheard of, in a three year old vehicle.

Appreciate the help guys.

Ive checked the gearbox mounts and they are good. A-Frame is in good nick to. Just went past Graeme Cooper automotive and booked it in. Showed them the video and they think, taking a guess obviously that it maybe the crown wheel bolts being over stretched as a result of the locker install.
Anyway nw that the sound can be replicated they should be able to find it

Also check the lower link on the rear suspension, especially the front mounts. I once had that symptom which was the big nut was slightly loose.

As a first item, perhaps check wheel nuts, and also consider the possibility it could be a drive flange spline worn.

Can you do another one this time park brake on, engine off on level ground and rock the vehicle back and forth quite forcefully. Last time i heard a similar sound it was the pinion flange 'twanging' on the splines due to the bolt not being torqued enough.

Hi Jc,

I have done the test you speak off with the same result however i didnt have the handbrake on. The guys at Graeme Cooper said that becuase the sound can be replicated it will be easy to find with someone under the car. Thier first response was the crown wheel bolts...but pinion would make sense too.

Thanks for the help mate.

They have to be very very tight. There was a bulletin or something similar a while back regarding increasing torque for tightening pinion flange on rover and p38a diffs in defenders. I even recall some mention of loctite on the splines however this will make a nightmare out of a simple seal replacement later on...😕

ohhh good grief what I noisy pile of crap you have!! ..... ohhh hang on its a Defender...its all good. :p :p :p

ok ok, all my jokes aside (and yes I really was joking).
It doesnt all sound too bad and well everyone has pretty well covered everything.

Just start with the basics and go through it all
*uni's
*diff flange loose.
*output flange loose.
*A frame bushes (highly likely, try going up and down a kerb and see if it clunk clunks more).
*A frame balljoint (above diff)
*gearbox mounts broken (in situ they may look fine until you jack up the transfer case and see it all separates).
*rear drive flange and axle wear (not so common but I see heaps of ex-army 110's that have this issue (not due to poor quality like a TDCi (puma) but because they are 50 million years old)
*Make sure handbrake isnt adjusted too close.

and one final dig...
Doesnt the engine noise, gearbox, transfer case whine and body rattles drown out this clunk clunk anyway?? :p

Regards
Daz

Believe it or not my defender drives quietly and the clunking is almost non existent, thats how i noticed this clicking noise.

Anyway next service Greame Cooper is going to look at it. He doesn't think its anything to worry about unless it gets worse. Im booked in on the 5th of December where they will also install an egt gauge and a provent 200 oil catch can....until then i live with the click noise
