Is a cruise control on a 300Tdi 130 TrayBack worth the effort? May eventually carry a slide-on camper similar to a TrayOn.
Thinking in terms of the long tar-top hauls out from Perth to get to real desert and The East Coast.
Have any folks had experience with a vacuum cruise control - and has it been beneficial or just a novelty? Strengths and weaknesses?

Aftermarket cruise controls have been fitted to all of my old bangers for the last 30 years or so. I think they're great, especially with my dodgy knee. I don't own a 300TDi but have fitted a couple of the AP60 kits to other peoples diesel 4WDs. Brake vacuum is fine for the task.

I don't know how well or not a vacuum system works on a Tdi, but I can tell 'ya that the command AP500 electric system doesn't work well at all.
The electric motor doesn't have enough torque to overcome the injection pumps rotary spring.
I had to remove it and replace it with a long coil type fitted along the kickdown cable.
Definitely beneficial having cruise .. I can't really drive without one(dodgy knee too).

I've had an earlier one on my County for around twenty years. I find it very useful for long trips - helps my sciatica because it saves having the right leg in the same position for long periods.

I'm seriously considering having cruise installed on my td5 Defender using a d2 set and resume switch mounted on the steering column. Does anyone in Melbourne do this?

Thanks for the positive feedback.
Will proceed to put a Command system in. It made sense to me to have one, but I did get earlier advice that it wasn't worth doing.
I'm comfortable now to go ahead.
Cheers
