Time for an upgrade I think. My current MacBook Pro has a damaged screen due to being dropped too many times. I could get it fixed or salary sacrifice a new one. Hmmm! I like new things.

Still pondering ....It's time I renewed mine, but the new pricing is a little steep.... waiting for a quote from the nice guy we buy LOTS of gear for work from :D

I just upgraded my old MacBook Pro (2011 model) and ended up getting a MacBook. I'm happy with it, and I didn't want to get another MacBook Pro, mainly because I do a lot of travelling with work, and wanted something lighter.

Well, seems I've lost my mind... I went and did it.

15" 2.7Ghz i7 Quad core 512GB SSD 16GB Ram 4GB Radeon Pro460... should be fun. :D

A smoking good quote plus salary sacrifice, meaning it really costs me about half of retail which certainly helps ;)

Oh Pedro...... beware of the emoji ........

Thats almost $4.5k of computer right there...

I'm really interested to hear what you think of the touch bar and the 4 thunderbolt/usb c ports. One thing i like about the prev gen macbook pros was the fact you didnt need an adapter to use anything that wasnt mac specific (like a standard external hard drive)

yeah yeah yeah

my old 1366 desktop pc is teetering on the edge of the abyss after years of abuse...

i need a lotto win to get myself into one of these tho...

the pricing is getting thoroughly ridiculous imho

You'd dead right Dave.

If I couldn't buy it the way I am and I had to pay retail..... not much chance I'd do it.

My last two seem to now be owned by my children..... so it's time I used work to justify another machine that should run Lightroom really nicely :p

How good a price?

My 13" MBP with a SSD seems to be going ok. I might kick it up to 16g RAM to help keep the spinning beach ball at bay.

Yeh I'll let you know once I've had it for a week or two.... that's still a while away yet.

You are right all the adapters do bug me...

But I'll put something like this on the desk at work:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/11/821.jpg

Only 1 cable to connect that way.

And carry something like this when I'm out with the car and camera.

My cameras now take SD and XQD... so going to have to carry something anyway....

Worked out to be little under 12% off retail for the Mac, Applecare and one of those adapters. Was cost price to my supplier I believe.

I will be salary sacrificing to, but I want to get a quote to fix my current MacBook Pro as this will get handed to the kids. I just don't have time at the moment. Maybe over Christmas once I get to Melbourne. My current MacBook Pro is a 13" with 6 months Apple Care Remaining. I think I might get a 15" this time. I once had a 17" Toshiba and the battery used to last about 15 mins. I got tired of hauling it around the country in a man-bag. I like the portability of the 13' but I find myself splitting the screen a lot these days working on documents and it is a bit small. I have two monitors at work and I always thought they were a bit silly until this year.

Of course the new pricing is steep. :)
I would also charge ridiculous prices if I had managed to convince people that they should queue up outside my store overnight to get the latest version of my product.
Of course it only remains the latest version for such a short time.
It costs a lot to stay at the bleeding edge. :)
I'm glad I don't need to. :)

I've heard the prev gen top of the line macbook is going for about $2.5k "refurbished" which is a more approachable price.

From what i can tell you get more peripheral ports, more dedicated buttons and less touchbar for $2k less...

I have a 15" windows laptop for working at home. It sucks compared to the twin 24" monitors at work. I have recently started using my ipad as a second screen using an app called duet. While its only 10", being able to put toolbars for CAD or reference drawings on it and work on the main screen less cluttered is so much better. If you have any sort of tablet you can do something similar :)

Cheers

Dan

No. I haven't even had time to get into an Apple Store to see what it will cost to fix the screen on this one. A new one will probably be early next year. Too many things to put on the D4 at the moment.

Well I finally got the new toy last week....

15" 2.7Ghz i7 Quad core 512GB SSD 16GB Ram 4GB Radeon Pro460

I obviously haven't had it for long enough to form a really good opinion.... but first impressions are pretty damn good.

Yes it was expensive.... but as mentioned earlier - through an initial big discount and purchasing it salary sacrifice.... it's not costing me as much out of my pocket as you would think.

Build is awesome... its slim and light and right now I couldn't be happier with it.

The screen is fantastic... so clear and rich in colour.

The one thing I really didn't expect is the audio....... its not just good "for a Laptop".. its just good.

Anyway. I'll stick my head back in a month or two and tell you what it's like to live with after a while.

Ive heard the audio quality is awesome for a notebook. It was compared to a previous gen model and the difference was chalk and cheese.

It's another thing i can't justify spending money on but im keen to hear your thoughts after a while [emoji14] :D

I have been honk the audio on my 2014 13" is pretty good. It has just been repaired and will last until mid year and I will salary sacrifice a 15". Keep us updated.

Thought I'd post a quick update.

I got the Macbook just after new year finally. As you'd expect it's beautifully made, the screen is gorgeous and its got tonnes of power.

Interestingly, I'm not as impressed with this one as I have been with previous machines.

As I work in a pure windows environment at work, I use OSX for personal stuff and run a Windows Virtual Machine, which I join to our corporate domain.

I prefer not to just boot camp it, as access to both systems simultaneously is handy. In the past I have always used VMWare Fusion, which has always run really smoothly for me - at least for the 5 years or so. So I set this up the same way, but have been plagues with dramas.

Windows machine running significantly slower than I expected for no real reason, long delays accessing file shares on the OSX drive all sorts of weirdness.

After some research I discovered, I'm not the only bloke with VMWare 8.5 and windows 10 having a miserable time. So after more stuffing around I finally decided to try Parallels instead...

Must say, even though I don't like their pricing model, the product seems pretty solid and I am back to a happy place with my VM.

On the OSX side, I've mainly used it for a bit of photo editing in lightroom and photoshop and couldn't be happier. (Well an SD slot might make me happier - but one of my cameras has moved to QXD anyway  )

The drive on this thing is super fast and the screen is perfect.

Overall it's a great machine, really not sure why I'm not quite as impressed with this one as I have been in the past.

But it certainly kicks the arse of the company HP Elitebook I've been using for the last 6 months :D

Thanks Bytemark,

What is the Touch bar like using Parallels? Does it offer anything or can you customise it? Or does it show traditional F buttons?

And are you frustrated with only USB C type ports yet? :p

Bytemrk

Touch Bar is only really useful in applications that are written to support it... as you suggested, for windows in Parallels, it simply works as Function keys and volume / brightness etc.

As far as USB-C, one of these:

And one of these:

Seem to get me past most of the pain.;)
