Does anyone know of any engine reconditioners in the Ringwood/Bayswater area that they would recommend? (that's in Melbourne)

Rebuilding this motor is turning into a financial disaster. Now I find that the exhaust valve seats are too far worn (and very pitted) to even contemplate keeping. I think the Rangie has been on gas at some point in it's life which probably explains the pitted seats & valves.

I rang a couple of places late this afternoon but they both wanted to recondition the entire head and the cost was around the $800 including valves. Now I have already pulled it apart and it is all cleaned. I know the Inlet valves and seats are fine and the valve guides look pretty good so ti's just the exhausr valves I want re-seated and lapped in.

Col Mackie Motors in Burwood ( just near Ritters) deal a bit with Rover heads, not 100% sure on price as i've never had anything done there but would be worth a phonecall to check out.

Ok thanks. I don't think they have to know anything about Landrovers as I would imagine re-seating the valves would be a very easy, mundane job for an engine reconditioner and there is nothing special about the LR heads.

Call Gary Gill (03) 97266452 in Croydon. Very good work done - no BS, reasonable prices.

Thanks Pierre, that's exactly what I was after. Does he have a company name?

Terminal Rose Nominees Pty Ltd, but what would you need that for? Talk to him, not his accountant!

Cheers,

Pete

A cheap option is to get another pair of good heads give them a valve grind and light surface grind - about $200 odd.

I have thought about getting another set od 2nd hand heads, it would end up about half the price of new valves & seats.
Mmmm, I dont' know, it is cheaper but if I go the other way I have fully reconditioned heads....but then again I will probably ditch the heads in a years time and go to efi. :? :?

You wont need to swap the ehads if you switch to efi, you will just need to use a die grinder or alot of filing to re create the notches in the intake ports for the injectors - easily done by using an efi valley cover as a template.

Thanks Pierre for Garry's number. He is a great bloke and I would recommend him anyday. I took the heads to him this morning and he had it all back to me this afternoon. I did not even have to replace the valve seats, he was able to hone them up, did a great job at a great price.
