Hi,
I'm currently prowling the Melbourne auctions for a trailer, but looking for backup options in the likely event I don't win one - the auctions are announced at such short notice it's hard to amass the required funds.
So, if you have a plan to part with a No 5 half ton trailer I'd be happy to hear from you.

If you get really desperate - and I mean REALLY - there are 6 or 7 in the yard 4 doors down from me that are for sale.
However I am a very long way from Melbourne...

Im willing to get one trucked down if the purchase price is right. I know minto has quite a few this month, by my mate in the area is unable to pick up my winnings for me.

There are 7 still in the yard. Two of them in the photo.
They are not in pristine condition but appear straight from the road. A couple are camo (faded) but others are plain green. None have canopies.

Current auction bids for No5s range $109 to $509 ........ more trailers yet to come on the market I believe.

Could it work out to buy one from gol Minto and get an outfit like KLR to pick it up for you (that is a service they provide) ?
NB. If you do this, make sure you buy one with a lunette for your pintle hook - some have them missing :)

Melbourne ones just shot past 1100 each. Im out at this stage. Got quotes for delivery from minto - $600. Not too bad but i found something more local for $1600 and much less messing around.
My current plan is to chase that up mostly as there is another payday between now and then. Greys auctions end a day short of next pay.

So I just put a deposit on a trailer.
Thanks heaps for all the advice.
I haggled one down from 1700 to 1200 at a machinery dealer in Geelong.
The same place I got my Perentie.
they are about 3 hours away and are willing to deliver to the queenscliff ferry for me, free of charge.
After much consideration and research, this seemed to be the least troublesome method of obtaining one.

Makes sense - well done on your purchase ! They are a solid piece of kit.
Going on the current auction on the graysonline site, Victorians sure are enthusiastic trailer buyers :)

They're Crump & Cornish 1 ton cargo trailers.
Geez, I would like to have them.

Yeah when the only two trailers hit $900 on the first day, I concluded that victorians clearly don't understand sniping.
They hit 1300 each this morning and I began considering other options...
minto has sweet prics but add 6% and $600 for shipping and I'm well on the way to a custom trailer.
I will need a canopy though.
I think I saw sone on ebay at some point.
Failing that I know a local canvas guy who's quite proficient.

Supply and demand.
They don't usually have trailers in the Vic auctions. If they do, it's only one or two.

Can't snipe on the Greys auctions. After the auction end time, the auction for an item remains open until ten minutes after the last bid.

Yes I'm aware of that - having won a few things there before.
But it's people who just want to havd their hand on the item to make sure it doesn't go anywhere... they end up paying far too much.
I think minto bidders are more experienced as a result of more regular auctions.

About sniping, I saw 2 Haulmark PT2-2 trailers go for $10K and $12K, PLUS commission & GST, same 2 guys bidding on them, one from Qld and one from Dandenong!
Dandenong guy also paid ~$39K plus commission & GST for a 6x6, previously I saw a couple with 50 kms on them, brand new out of the box go for 22 & 24.

Yes, it happens! I bought a new 3.5 kva genset a few years ago, seller had them buy it now for $650, which I did, he also had them for auction, generally selling for about 620, watched a couple bid to $1050 for one!
I had to laugh, just like I did with the trailers and 6X6 above!

My father was an auctioneer...back in the days of actually physically going to an auction sale....I used to be up there as a bid-spotter with him...and we always discussed and chuckled at the end of the sale...about particular people who got 'auction fever' and just kept bidding until they won...usually paying more than new retail price. I guess it carries over to online auctions.
