View Full Version : Tuning Box for 3.6 TDV8 Good or Bad

A few years ago I bought a Probitz tuning box as it had been recommended to me by a Land Rover Technician. But before I fitted it a freind said they are a bit risky so i didn't bother fitting it. Now I'm thinking about giving it a go.
I know that the preferred option is a remap but that is more expensive than the option I already have. My understanding is that tuning boxes increase the fuel pressure by manipulating sensor signals which allegedly can cause problems.
I wondering if anyone has any actual experience with issues caused by fitting a tuning box as I've been following this site and others for a few years, have friends that are Landrover Techs and never heard of any issues being caused by a Tuning Box.
One of my main concerns would be turbo or gearbox failure, not that I'd be planning to go racing.

A lot of differing opinions on these boxes. Some as you say just boost fuel/turbo pressure, others offer 4-6 varying maps from economy, towing to just big HP. Same goes for re-maps good and bad out there !!!
Just be careful and ask a lot of questions from your supplier ! E-mails are very handy as you will have a copy of their reply and recommendations. We are going to chip my wife's Skoda diesel Octavia with a box from these guys.

if you have a common rail the dearer box is the go as it has a fuel rail sensor.
Re-maps show up on the 2012+ VW/Skoda electronic systems when plugged into the factory diagnostic machine. I believe LR are similar from around that time, only a big factor if warranty is still on the vehicle.
I checked a lot of VW/Skoda forums especially in the UK and they got a very favourable response. 2 versions available ! Check the UK LR forums for any boxes your considering, and ask yourself if you want the EGR's to work or not etc. One advantage of these type of boxes is that you change it to another car later and have it reprogrammed for that vehicle fairly cheaply.

Remapping is the only safe method of enhancing common rail diesel engines. I would Never risk a tuning box on any engine, most definitely one that has a rail pressure increase in order to achieve results. I would seriously save up for the remap. They are cheaper than you think and won't destroy the engine.

I had a remap done by Roo Systems in Brisbane and it's been fantastic (plus new dual 3 inch exhaust), - I like dragging 200 series cruisers - bye bye lol😜

Interesting read indeed, but his article is written mostly around the increase of power being a driver for a chip or ECU remap, not other reasons.
I have EGR Valves failing now on a 211,000kms Range Rover 3.6 TDV8, and that is an expensive exercise to replace, clean, blank (and let's not talk about the myriad components in the valley that should be replaced as plastic piping, gaskets, seals, therostat housing, covers, etc. that will be failing or brittle) vs getting a remap to delete the EGR sensors and EGR's Valves themselves, which in turn avoids soot particles entering the air intakes (not better for emissions but better for the engine). I'm not after more power (but will get it) and the increase is only around 15-19% anyway. Transmission is up to the job on these. Cooler air is the key here, so a non restrictive air intake or mods to the intercooler system would help in that process, to save various components. Certainly not desired, but sometimes these things are necessary. Or do I replace the EGR Valves and keep as standard and clean them on a regular basis. Either way, I've had good value but some tough decisions to make!
