Hiyas

Original shocks died and front and back pretty skittish on rough roads and corrugations. Replaced with Bilsteins which I've had on previous discos with great success and reliability. All others would cook around 1400 after all day on corrugations and the D2's TC would start going berserk. Not so with the Billies, good all day. :D

So for the SVX natural replacement was Billies. However, I have noticed that with the billies keeping the wheels on the ground there is a lot more kickback at corrugation/rough speed 80-90kph. Hard yakka on wrists. :(

Any comment? Is a steering damper the go?.......................or might it simply be backlash in the steering box???

Cheers

I'd do the swivel pre-load first but the damper is most likely past it's best. Pat

When the original steering damper went in my td5 it was hideous, basically undrivable.. could be the issue.... wandered continuously felt unstable through the steering wheel I basically borrowed a car and had to grab a replacement , that was on country tar roads let alone dirt.... cheep fix if that's the case( some say bilstein dampers arnt very good , I can't say)...

Thanks for the info on the steering damper.

Bilstiens - For a while there I was destroying a set of shockies/dampers every year or so, spending up to 3 months a year on corrugations in the Centre and across The Top fitted to my D2 High value "reputable" brands.

Additionally they would not get past around 1400 any given day without "boiling" and causing the Traction Control to start continuously chirping and chattering (wheel skip).

Fitting Bilstiens cured all of that. Remained serviceable for years and years - same annual punishment. D2 was traded/sold with the billies still fitted. If the Bilsteins hadn't fixed the problem I would have had to look at remote reservoir shocks $$$$$$even bigger$$$$$$$$

SVX with Billies - all rough road corrugation skittishnes gone! Actually goes where I point - first time :D. Hopefully at the price per corner they will be as reliable as the ones I had on the D2. Now, as mentioned they are causing another problem to show up. Backlash first then new damper if needed. :)

Perhaps pull the damper , if it's shot enough I'd think I'd be able to tell. Interestingly enough mine went after updating the shocks. Ended up using what I could get at the timr( ironman😱)... done 60 or more k kms on dirt without an issue
