Although I prefer Moreton island I do need to make one last trip to Fraser as the bride and step daughter haven't been over there yet.

My last trip was '99....in the first D2 we had.
The trip before was '74 during the Christmas school holidays and the floods and cyclone.
I did numerous trips and spent months at a time there with my parents as my father did a lot of environmental work for the sand miners,Qld museum, etc, from '69 to '76.
No maps In those days,we worked off Ariel photographs and with a compass.
No help from anyone if you got bogged or had a vehicle break down.At times we didn't see a tourist for three weeks.:)
IMHO the place is wrecked, but My opinion only.;)
The only way to stop the place getting more damaged is to reduce the number of tourists(which will probably never happen),and stop public access to more areas.
Maybe that is because I can remember what the place was originally like. Those trips were some of the best times we ever had:)
Moreton isn't to bad.Going mid week is the best, the cost of the barge seems to keep many of the undesirables away.:)

North of Champagne Pools is quieter. I think that's the limit of hire cars.
JC I'd take the L322. I was very impressed with mine on Moreton. Your td6 with the remap sounds similar to the tdv8. The extra power and torque is no comparison to the mighty 4BD1T. The L322 floor is flat. I kept a plastic scrubbing brush in the door and gave the sand a brush out at the end of the day. I also have mats. Sand wasn't a problem even with kids.
That 90 owner made a very costly error. It was clearly deep. The 90 would be more prone to floating and losing traction with no tank in the back.
Up in the nth of Fraser are lots of shallow puddles of brackish freshwater. For some reason every now and then I found one that looked shallow like the others but was about 4ft deep. You need to be careful of those. I was glad to be in the 110 then. Although the L322 probably would have been ok. It was only a brief dunking.

I know mine doesn't run off compliments and the occasional car-wash. It drinks diesel. Out of a tank. In the back.

I reckon they should triple the camping/access fees and cut the numbers of campers by 2/3rds......sadly we are loving the place to death.
I would certainly pay extra for less people.

My first trip to Fraser was in 1970 when Gordon Elmer st0arted running the barge from Inskip Point. However, my father went across in a Series II 109 SW in 1969 before the barge was operating - drove the Landy onto a fishing boat, with front and rear hanging over each side :o and needing to wait for the tide before loading and unloading. :o
He was a keen fisherman and went to great lengths to get to some places.

I went up around the top and down the western side in January, That part (the best part) is almost deserted apart from a few yachts. Access is denied up there because too many vehicles are lost.

We were last there in 2009 with the D3, it has certainly changed since the first time I was there in a mate's petrol GQ patrol in about 1983. Last time we were able to drive to the top but missed the tide to allow us to safely drive around to the lighthouse. My Grandfather was the master of the Maheno before it was decommissioned and broke adrift whilst being towed for scrapping so I've got a soft spot for Fraser.

I remember that barge well,i am pretty sure it was operating in '69.
During the cyclone and king tides of '74,it was only that Gordon saw the lights of the S1,and we were good customers, that he waited for us.The tide was rising,
we were late, many of the old wooden bridges on the inland tracks had collapsed, and we had to drive around them. That was fun and games, particularly as we were towing a trailer. The weather was very bad,we had to drive through the sea which was around a meter deep,to get onto the barge. The vehicle and trailer were then roped down.
Then just as we got off the barge onto the beach at Inskip pt,the generator light came on.Got home to Brisbane without the generator charging.Spent half the trip pulling leeches off us....
That was the most eventful return of all the trips we did up there.I could actually write a book about all the trips if I had time. The drowning of a brand new company LWB S111 in Ellie creek was another.Trips up to the tip were another, they certainly gave that capstan winch and the long handled shovel a workout.
One thing we worked out very quickly was the old S1 was way better in the sand than the company's LWB series threes.

You'd be nuts to do it solo. There are some sections that have been opened. Talk to the Rangers and see what you can get out of them. If they think you are in any way gung ho you'll get nothing.
The main danger up there is that the sand on the west side is like quick sans and what you might expect to be hard, is often like souffle. Many vehicles have been hopelessly bogged then swallowed by the rising tide.

So sandy cape you don't suggest on your own or getting to the tip. Not really concerned about the west side. Would love to get to the top.
If it's too dangerous then no chance il do it solo. I have zero experience on sand

Sandy Cape is fine. You'll get experience quick enough. There will be enough people to lend a hand if you get into trouble. Keep your tyre pressure less than 15 PSI and you be OK. It's when you get past Sandy Cape that you need company especially company that know the area.

I did the tip about 7 years ago now with 235/85/16 tyres, dieselgas and a 2 inch lift. I also had lockers but didnt need them.
The biggest problem we had was other people getting stuck without letting their tyres down. Pretty sure we came across aomeone in a triton and the conversation went like this:
Me: you look a little stuck.
Triton: yeah can you pull me out?
Me: what pressure are you tyres at?
Triton: i dunno, 32 psi
Me: there ya go, let them down to 14psi and you'll be laughing!
Triton: nah i cant be bothered
Me: OK then. See ya!
He just kept hacking at it and we drove around him. Saw him later in the day and made sure we were in front of him when we came to a single lane track.
It gets a bit softer towards the tip, but we did it (with other cars) without need for recoveries, or really any effort. I drove through one section thinking "this is soft sand!" Only to realise my handbrake was partly on! We didnt head west though. Heard that was much harder.
That was 7 years ago now so the tracks are probably a bit different. I wouldnt say you're nuts trying to get to the tip by yourself but if you get stuck you're unlikely to find help nearby!
Cheers

I took a stock p38 Range Rover to the top a few months ago, had one bogging in soft sand but so we all the posers in lifted big tyred cars, all I did was tyres down to 15 and all was good...best place in world, want to retire there...

Sandy Cape (the best part of Fraser Is) is a doddle at low tide with the only drama being Ngala rocks bypass...and so many people get stuck there there's always someone to help if it happens to you :D
Low pressures, momentum and recovery gear will see you through.
The sand is soft on the western beach as you come around the top but you can only go as far as the lighthouse anyway.

Unless the muddy part is really chopped up, ngala rock bypass isnt that hard. Softer than the beach, yes, but i found the inland tracks more of a challenge.

Great. You'll love it. My 110 wasn't really challenged much and I haven't used recovery gear on Frazer yet, except to pull a Hilux out of a bog. Your 90 should have no trouble.

I did Fraser in a D1 with stock tyres.
Did the entire circumference, just timed the tides well.
There were a few "challenging bits", but lowering tyre pressures mostly alleviates them.
Terribble place - dont go there

This is an interesting thread, the blokes in the video are idiots and are part of the reason many areas are getting closed off to 4wders. The first access track they are going up has been closed for years, but some people keep removing the bollards that the rangers install to indicate that the track is closed - at the top you can see the boards heading back down to the beach - this track is the northern access track for Orchid Beach.
The Wathumba Crossing has also been closed for years. In the past you were able to drive from the barge landing at Moon Point all the way up to Wathumba Creek along the western beach, but they closed the northern end of the beach to vehicle traffic and Moon Point is now also closed. There were a couple of challenging Creek crossing along this stretch of beach.
The beach north of Wathumba Creek is also closed to through traffic, you can access Platypus Bay and drive about 250m each side of the access track however north of this mark is closed to all vehicles right round to the Restricted road up to the lighthouse.
The western beach is prone to getting covered in weed, which is unable to be seen when it gets covered in sand so it looks hard, but as already mentioned in this thread, isn't and many cars have been lost.
Fraser Island is great, I always try and travel 2 hours either side of low tide. I normally run about 20psi. Ngkala Rocks bypass can be a challenge depending on how dry it has been and how chopped up by other drivers, but if the sand is low on the beach there are other rocks that might restrict your access to the Cape/lighthouse.
And you can't drive the entire circumference of Fraser as Moon Point to the bottom of the Island isn't able to be driven.

Returned from Fraser yesterday.
Great trip.
We camped at Waddy Point top site which is fenced. This is the most Northern fenced campsite , with kids gave us peace of mind. Very quiet with max # of other campers totally 5!
Yep Ngals rocks bogged me till I dropped my pressures further to 15PSI. Great bit of learning there. Whilst I have Mud tyres fitted , I wouldn't have believed a drop of 5PSI could make such a difference.
Very impressed with the Puma 110's capabilities.
Yes there are plenty of D*ckheads however there are also a lot of great people also wanting to get the most out of their Frasrr experience.
Interesting recovery of a FJ Cruiser.....All the Gear....No idea springs to mind(see post in Defender wave)
Convoyed with a Perentie, lots of chats with other Deefer Drivers.
Brilliant Trip
