Removed D3s radio and added a nice new GPS, DAB radio, Bluetooth phone ...
My D3 2005 SE did not have steering wheel controls. Quick search suggest wiring is in the car with out without controls and adding them is possible
Link 1 (https://lr3tips.wordpress.com/2006/05/29/adding-radio-control-buttons-to-steering-wheel/) The base model LR3 (Discovery 3) does not come fitted with steering wheel mounted radio control buttons. However, it does come prewired for them!
Link 2 (http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID013194) part Discovery 3 Steering Wheel Switches at www.rimmerbros.co.uk (http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID013194)
Parts depend on VIN such as XPD500510WVH look like its is possible.
I rang Ritters (Craig) who had suggested Freeway audio to me, He told me I was the first he has had asking for this :) Doubt I am first anyone upgraded to Steering wheel controls yet?
Thank you in advance

Having an HSE and the higher end audio then I already have the switches so am not much use to you. My understanding was that the wiring would be there but that is a guess.
One thing I would be interested in is what unit you bought for your vehicle please?

I looked into steering wheel controls for audio (i have cruise control buttons) but it wasn't worth a couple of hundred bucks to save me reaching for the volume knob. If you don't have cruise then definitely get that!.
It should just plug in. If your wheel doesn't have cruise control I'm not sure the wiring us there so i would pull the wheel apart to check before ordering any bits.

Our 2007 D3 SE didn't come with them, and I bought the parts from one of the sponsors on a UK forum, and I believe (i.e. The audio installer didn't mention otherwise) that they were a straight plug in to the existing loom. Had to buy an additional interface box when we changed the head unit later, but that's pretty normal. Was so long ago now, I can't remember any extra details.

Of course I still exist.....actually drove past your place a few months back going home after shooting....didn't think you'd appreciate a wake up call given the time though!!
Our D3 is up for replacement, but she can't decide if she wants a RRS or a sports car.....and she reckoned me getting the R1 was my midlife crisis!
We will have to catch up for sure!

Is the unit installed and looking good. It tilts and has adjustable tilt to allow to remove glare as needed. Have not played much yet but its phone is much better then the blueant bluetooth unit I had and the reversing camera is significantly better and faster than the existing camera via a VMS map systems I had.
After speeding through a school Zone in Western Vic last year, I think I may appreciated the school zone alerts. My D3 Clock which I had checked was out by 15 minutes so I was doing the 'speed limit' and was exactly 30kph over the 40kph school limit- - my bad --
I had held off doing this a few years ago as none of the units had off road maps which are now on several of the options. I found several other radio bands including FM, MW and LW. Loving the digital here in Melbourne.
I do have cruise control on the wheel but will double check wiring before ordering the parts.

I have a spare steering wheel switch pack from a Freelander2 which for all intents and purposes looks the same as the one from the Discovery 3...
It's yours if you pay for postage...
(although I cannot say for sure if it fits or functions on a Disco)

My RRS has full radio control on the steering wheel - ticks the box but is not much chop - I use the controls on the radio most of the time - as actually easier and and the controls are always in the one position - bit hard to adjust the radio from the wheel when steering.
Ok if fitted as standard but nothing I would pay dollars to retro fit. They do control the command centre menu though so important if you have this.

There's a comprehensive guide to colours/years/applications/part numbers on Disco3.uk. You just need to know year and VIN.
Simples.

I have had time to drive with the unit above and for two reasons it is being taken out of my car.
1- it reports school zone where they have never existed such as in the middle of a freeway near ringwood. Speeding alerts and radio muffled at over a dozen map or non school zone sites.
2- alpine blames the mapping provider and offered a link for me to let them know of all their faults.
The Installer has bent over backwards to help. He and I assume Alpine offered an upgraded or alternative alpine unit. I have declined as they would still have the same in my view faults.
Happily I am not stupid enough to slow to 40kph while driving with a tonne of traffic doing the correct speed limit. I could of course turn off that function. I do like it when its speed and school zone warnings work.
The installer Freeway car audio Dandenong generously offered me a kenwood unit DNX8160DABS | Multimedia and Navigation | Car Electronics | KENWOOD Australia (http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual_navigation/dnx8160dabs/)
I will take this very kind offer once the steering wheel controls have turned up so I can at least pay him for installing that bit for me.
