I was expecting this to happen. I imagine they go for ages not being used while in military service, then again I expect they go straight into a workshop for a thorough check...

Left her running for five minutes or so, then went for a quick drive to the end of the road. Engine seems fine, gearbox seems fine. Nothing clunks or rattles any more than I remember it doing in June.

There is however a metallic rubbing noise that increases with speed not engine revs. Coasting along doesn't make it go away so it's not to do with links between engine and axles.

The most obvious thing I can think of it being is a rusted or slightly warped brake disc or a pad not sitting right. It did it before going out of use, but now it's heaps louder (possibly indicating more rust).

Am going to follow the long laborious process for jacking it up and get the wheel off for a better look...

EDIT: Actually no i'm not. Looking at the guards shielding the hub assembly from brake dust I can see someone has tried to bend on slightly away from the brake disc itself, the other one hasn't been. It feels like they're both touching in places, so i've tried to prise them back a bit. Aside from that, i've got a leaking hub but I don't think that is causing this - it would be a grinding noise rather than a whooshwhooshwhooshwhoosh one. Something is definitely warped as it's not constant. Ah well, she's off for a service once I move over to Newport next weekend.

Those guards are held on by 1 small (10mm I think) bolt . take them off and see if the noise goes away.

Also check your Universal Joints. They are still spinning when you are coasting. They may need a good greasing or replacement.

Parts of your description make it sound as if checking the universal joints would be a good idea.

I have had uni joints fail on two different vehicles in the last 50 years. The first sounded like a stick caught under the vehicle and rubbing on the bitumen road. I could hear it vary as the vehicle moved up and down on the suspension.

The second one sounded completely different. It sounded like a squealing, seized bearing and also varied with suspension movement.

It could be a lot of things, but that seems to be one worth checking.

As you suspect, I would think rusted front rotors and brake drums (including the handbrake drum) the likely suspects.
