hi guys
i'm looking at buying a 96 V8 disco. i had a drive and there is noise coming from near the footwell when taking up drive. seemed to indicate the transfer bearings were on the way out. Hard to describe but sounds like a whine. did some research on service records and told that i would be looking at $800-$1200 for the repairs. true or false? if so is there a good place to go for repairs in the sydney area?

You may need one of these. http://www.steve-parker.co.uk/site.html

Under "Designed Parts" Oil Feeder.

It directs the oil to the shaft & the gear.

Alternatively you can buy a modified cross drilled gear. It was a known problem & was rectified on later vehicles by using the CD gear.

I fitted one to my 300 Series Discovery & the whine went. The only whine I hear these days is SWMBO when I fill up with PULP. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

You can try Award Diff & Gearbox services at Rydalmere.
Ph # 9638 0822.
He should be able to drive your car & diagnose the problem from there.

4bee, the cross drilled input gear was done to avoid gear/shaft spline wear. As far as I know, it didn't affect whine.

BTW, it's a good thing SWMBO whines when you fill a 300Tdi with premium Unleaded 8O 8O .

is it a whine or clunk???

if its a whine it will be there forever, they all do it.
if it is a clunk then you will find it is the Transfer input gear.

replace it with the cross drilled one at about $300 for the part, then the output shaft on the box could be stuffed, but more than likely you can just replace the gear.

Yes I understand that was the reason, but in doing either mod, the oil is gets to the gear/shaft & so the whine diminishes/goes.

Anyway, worked on mine.

Try Graeme Cooper. I think he has rebuilt lots of gearbox shafts as I recall seeing dozens in his workshop which he bought from Rover a warranty returns.
Even if its a transfer bearing rebuild , they do quite a few of those.
I am not affiliated with them, and they do make the odd mistake with my car, but you at least are not paying someone to learn about Rovers!!!

300 series Disco = 300Tdi (I presume)
PULP = Premium UnLeaded Petrol

Diesel engine + petrol :?

In the rest of the world Disco 1's are often referred to as 200 series (not disco 1) Disco 1 updates are often referred to as the 300 series (not disco 1 update)

so a 300tdi is a 300 series Disco TDI the V8 is a 300 series Disco V8.

Note my Sig. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

300 Series may not have been an Official Landrover term but it seems it was widely used anyway.

UMMM,
Sort of the Whine thread (just me whining)

I have to bite

200 series should only ever used correctly to describe a 200 TDI and the 300 series is only ever used to descibed the 300 TDI, mainly because these are the titles given to the engines, but only diesels definately not the petrols not the 4 cyl petrol, or the V8 petrol. 8O

There aren't too many people(here or overseas,,,one or two adds isn't really widely used) who would call a V8 disco a 200 or 300 series, because they just aren't. :?
You might want to use the MA, or MY, etc prefixe's as most tradies do, or even rossignol and what ever the early one was called, or like most international forums, you could just say an earlier or a late disco, ora 3.5 or a 3.9 if your yapping about a V8,,,,, 92, and 98 are significant years.
I think most people who are disco nuts would imediately think diesel if you said 200/300 series.

Thats my understanding anyway. this is the first place I have ever heard of a 300 series V8 disco, Its a bit like saying a 6cyl SLR5000
