View Full Version : Yet another defender lift Q to add to the stack...

Wanting to lift the 130 2"ish to get clearance for bigger tyres....
Decided on the Ironman kit, very good value for money and haven't heard of any problems with them...
Only issue may be that they don't seem do heavy enough rear springs in length I need.....
I currently have stock rears at (as best I can measure with wheel unweighted) 420mm long x 170ish mm external diametre x 20-21mm thick. (not measured inner 'helpers', as not going to replace them)
Fronts are 370x150ishx17mm

The fronts come off fine, with options available of 400/408mm, 415/425 and 420/430 ironman springs in correct width and thickness... sweet. ( I hear of RR alternative, back to that later..)

Rears options are 440 or 480mm tall, but both only in 17mm diametre....methinks way too soft compared to current 20-21mm thick with added inner 'helper' springs.

'Hiline' said he used RR springs all round to get 3" lift, but my inquiries so far say perfect option for front, but shorter than stock rears, and much smaller diametre.

I just need to know who has lifted their 130 utes a similar amount (or done a lift for someone), what size springs fid you use, what weight of spring will I need in rear without inner spring (I want it softer than it is currently, but not so as I can't tow and carry loads, do other vehicle makes run a compatible spring size (rumours or Nissan?)

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

G'day mate,, I am going thru exactly the same at the moment, my rear springs which are standard for the 130 is free lenght 405mm long and still has the color coding from land rover. I was at iron man today and they checked it out and said they believe it is already lifted 50mm. as their 50mm upgrade spring is 405mm long by 20mm dia.( same as whats already there) he said they can make another spring in a larger diameter but reckons there would be little difference and I just needed to replace the shockers which is what I am going to do, I appreciated his honesty.

I think they are going off the 110 maybe, and the 130 comes with the longer spring I'm not sure.

Anyway that's my 2 bobs worth

I have a set of defender rear, 320 Lb, 475mm long coils here. Had them made when I was playing with suspension on mine a while back. Perfect condition, sitting here...

Make an offer, they'd work brilliant in a 130 with inner coil.

Or, I also have a set of 360Lb x 435mm coils if you prefer.

Cheers

Track down 'Jase' in this site. He has been fantastic with hepling me so far and mixing and matching kits. I think I have decided on the ironman Land00011B for front, same weight as stock, but 440mm long (aprox 60mm taller) there are shorter options available. On the rear, i'm getting a nissan spring, as the Landy ones not tall enough, I have gone foe a lighter than stock option, but also 60mm taller. I'll let you know how they go, but contack Jase, as we have done most of the ground work on the matter already...

Yeah, wider track is great... Mines sitting around 150mm out from std...
Add to that the 10" rim and she's very very stable

'jase' (aulro member) helping me out bigtime with mixing and matching ironman kit sizings at moment. I'll let you know how it goes. basically looking at land0011B kit on front (60mm taller) and a compatible nissan kit on the back to get my desired height and weight.

Hi tombraider,

do you know what the standard lb. rating for the 130 is. 475mm high certainly would jack it up. what size do you have in yours now

here comes the party pooper....

check with your insurance....wider track up to a certain amount is ok...
i think about 20mm......any more and they can void your policy in the
event of a claim......(assuming of course they find out)

but yes....widening the track has the effect of lowering the centre of gravity.....
good thing....

SSSShhhhhh

Stability has increased a lot but with extra track comes "tracking" issues, because the wheel is no longer centred over the hub it tracks things more now, and bumps can be felt more through the steering. Its not an issue, its easily controllable but you can tell its there.

No worse than a mate, he just fitted some 33-15.5-15's to a set of 10" rims... They're seriously large!

Aside from Track/Wheel width my vehicle is legal. Serious!

10" Rims arent legal fitment on any 4wd....

But hey!

My "road" rims are 8" I just keep forgetting to swap them back over :!:

I'll post some pics soon.... Or look for Tombraider in the Gallery, it may have a peek!

Cheers

The Whyalla Cops see it all the time.
Even had one walk over one day and comment on how tough it looked :!:

He looked at the wheels, said "They look massive" smiled and kept talking.

They havent touched me and they wont, I dont give them any reason too.

Fortunately theres a big difference between safe, illegal and legal.
Engineers have stated my modifications are safe, but illegal.

I have mine sorted, thanks to 'Jase' and some patience and mix 'n' matching.... Going with Iron man kit.....front is 440mml ong x 17mm thickness (standard thickness, not sure of poundage) and in the rear, getting some compatible nissan springs, 480mm x 17mm (****ing off helper springs, these are much lighter than stock, but planning poly air upgrade when a couple 'o' more bucks free up.
Can't wait.
Thanks to all and sundry for advice.

Guys, you posted a request for some wheel/tyre pics etc... For "Lara".

Here you go!

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
These are the 16 x 10s with 305-70-16 Dick Cepek FCIIs, a great tyre!

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
A front view of "Lara" this is what traffic (especially pensioners in Camrys) hate in the rearview mirror!
The approach angle is now awesome, much better than the last bar on the front.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
A slightly angled view, showing the extra track width and flare extensions.

She's my pride and joy! I just have to finish a few things off and she'll be right (till the next mod). In the images the numberplate is obscured (havent bothered to fit it correctly yet) but reads TOMBRDR

Maaate! very nice, there's a picky (ad) in the 4wd monthly of a defender with a similar bar on the front, which I was looking as I just ripped off half of my bumper in the bush last week.
When you said you increased the track by 150mm, that looks like each side or is that the total

Thanks for that

In July (If I'm a good boy and my new job pans out) she may have Portals  Not holding my breath on that one though, but I can hope

Thanks for the comments!
