View Full Version : My Dad bought a D3... what to check?

So, despite me cautioning him to do his homework, he went a bought a D3 from a dealer. It's a 2008 SE TDV6, with ~80,000km on the clock, and according to him appears very well looked after.

It has log books from Austral, but I'm yet to look at them. Not that I'm any authority on any vehicle, let alone a D3, but I'm healthily sceptical on buying used cars.

Anyone able to suggest things I should be looking for, either in the vehicle or in the books? Also, anything may be vulnerable for this model at this age?

Finally, is there a list of any recalls, and a way to check whether they've been done?

There should be plenty of life left in it with only 80,000km. It's probably a good time for a transmission service.

Ks are goood,2008 is considered to be the best.As suggested tranny service and metal pan conversion.

Buying from a "good" dealer is a great thing. They have an obligation to give you a statutory 3 month warranty which gives you time to sort out anything you find wrong. I saved a fortune on this. Well over $10,000 actually. Make sure you bring it back if you find anything! They have no choice but to fix it.

Interesting, why so Andy?

I might advise him to take it to MR and have them check it out. Fingers crossed he's got a good vehicle.

The 2008 was a good D3 edition as LR had done some tweaks to an already good product in 2007. In late MY08s LR fitted the better oil pump. But the also fitted the ZF with the lead free stator bush. I understand the late 2008s/2009 MY09 D3 got similar electronics to the 2009 MY10 D4.

While the D4 SDV6 is a great car to drive, I think my Discovery pick would be an upspeced D4 with a remapped 2.7 with similar km.

Did you mean and upspeced D3?

No, I like the interior of the D4. Sorry. A little off topic.

One service item which should have been done in 2015 on a 2008 model, is replacing the timing belts. It's due at 168,000km or 7 years - whichever comes first. If it wasn't done, I would try pushing the dealer - selling a car which hasn't been serviced to schedule is a bit rich, imho.

Also check that the last of the HPFP recalls was performed - this can be checked by entering the VIN into Topix. Land Rover (http://www.productsafety.gov.au/recall/land-rover-2007-to-2009my-discovery-3-ranger-rover-sport-high-pressure-fuel-injector-pump-extension-of-pra2009-10962)

Don't let the dealer fob you off with "Yes, the HPFP recall was done" - as there were several! The last one is it - P021 - if that wasn't done, it wasn't done! ;)

Plus agree that if he is going to keep it for a while, servicing th 6HP26 is a good idea.

Cheers,
Rob

My MY08 had the inferior pump and yes the belts should be changed by now regardless of kms even though they look brand new. Change to later pump housing a must.

LCAs will either be done or need doing also.

Agree on tranny service.

Otherwise enjoy.

I couldn't see where you enter the VIN - am I correct in assuming you can enter the VIN to see what recalls have been performed on a particular vehicle?
