Fuel rail - high pressure fault

Evening all,

My SE SDv6 has now done 13,000kms since picking up in mid-Aug. Has been a great performer for me, particularly in the fuel economy stakes. I am averaging 8.8l/100kms using as a daily driver of a minimum 90kms a day.

However, in the last couple of weeks a recurring issue has arisen. I keep getting a fault (high pressure in fuel rail) pop up resulting in reduced performance. I can clear the error with my code reading tool, but the fault keeps coming back.

Have had it back to the dealer twice. First time they tested the fuel rail pressure sensor but could not find a fault (I had cleared before taking to the dealer). The second time I called roadside assist and had it towed with the fault still active. Dealer replaced the sensor and the high pressure fuel pump, but a day later the fault was back. It is going back to the dealer tomorrow morning for its third visit.

Am interested to see if anyone else has had this fault, and if it was able to be resolved. Am wondering if it is a logic issue rather than a mechanical one.

Perhaps a partial or intermittent restriction in the return line, eg at the fuel filter assembly where a hose might be pinched.

Apparently they have already checked that, but asked them to recheck.

They are now working through each of the electrical connections one by one. Have identified a couple of pins that look not quite right. Will see what tomorrow brings.

So what was the verdict?

NFI, either by me, the dealer or LRA. They are now coordinating with the techs in the UK.

They have had the vehicle for 10 days now, so am calling tomorrow to see if there is any conclusion. Last time I spoke to them they said they were just trying everything the tech guys asked them. Each time they think it has been solved, the fault pops back up again. I have suggested they reflash the ECU in case it is a logic issue.

Unfortunately not. Now into its fifth week at the dealer.

They have removed the fuel tank and the lines in case anything was damaged during the build. Now onto the low pressure fuel pump and injectors. Only have the fuel rail to go and the whole fuel system will have been done. They have also replaced the new high pressure pump in case it was faulty. Fault is still there. Not sure where they will go next.

I'm surprised that the fuel rail wasn't replaced before dropping the tank. Hopefully the cause will soon be discovered and that you've had the use of at least an equivalent vehicle in the meantime.

Me too Graeme, much easier job I would have thought, particularly given the tank was full ready for a trip away over Christmas. The other thing I have been thinking of is whether there is a high pressure relief valve (I had one on my VW Golf that we had to change out for a higher pressure when we did up the motor) that may be playing up.

My replacement vehicle is a mk2 Freelander from a car hire company. Does okay as a daily driver to the office, and I have my Ranger for any towing duties.

The relief valve is part of the high pressure pump so has already been replaced twice.

The FL is hardly a comparable vehicle. Perhaps the dealer needs to make representations to LRA for LRA to supply a more appropriate vehicle.

Has the return pipe from the pump to the filter been rpelaced?

Had a call from the dealer late today. Believe they have finally solved the issue after installing a full set of new injectors after previously replacing the low pressure fuel pump.

They will perform some more tests on Monday and then will hopefully get the all clear to pick up and bring home. Much more time there and would have spent 33% of my time of ownership sitting in the workshop.
