Hello from Sherwood.

One of my New Year resolutions was to clean up a few projects that have been languishing under the house. One is to convert an out of test gas bottle to a camp fire place.

I have removed the shroud that protects the valve in order to get a large stilsen wrench onto it. Unfortunately, my vice isn't big enough to hold the base still in order to get sufficient purchase on the wrench.

Can anyone help out with access to a larger vice or holding device?

Have a google, but I think the trick with those is to heat up the valve to undo the thread sealant. This is after you've filled it with water to drive out any residual gas. Empty it before heating.

Google the topic and you get seem to get chains of threads (camping, caravanning, 4WD etc) arguing about the residual gas content and safety of heating, cutting or drilling water filled gas bottles. Probably why I didn't bother until now to attempt to do much with the bottle.

Anyway, I am sure that dozens of folks have successfully turned 9kg gas bottles into chuffas without incident other than the physical task of breaking the seal to get the valve out. About where I am now.

Hi Neill,

I used straps to tie it to a post in the shed and then a big shifting spanner. Have the straps tied in the opposite direction to what you are trying to turn and they will tighten up as you work harder. At least it worked for me. I just left water in there for a few days, drained it out then attacked it with the grinder without any trouble.
