First off, this is a bit of a distance gazing, long range planning sort of thing at the moment...if the project goes ahead it won't begin for a year or maybe two.

The rough outline is to take a wagon, stretch the chassis, and turn it into a dual cab flat tray.

Looking for pros and cons of the D2 or the P38...

I know the P38 will have more toys. I know there will be more electrical stuff to sort out. I know it will look nice and be comfy.

I'm quite familiar with the D2 now, and if I used one I know roughly how I'd go about it.
Looking for wisdom from those who know Rangies as well. Specifically after anything that might sway the choice of base vehicle one way or the other.

I know a Disco will work well, but at the same time I like Rangies and not many ute conversions out there on P38...

No idea, my only thoughts are:

D2 - you can have a diesel and/or manual transmission
D2 - you can probably build a stronger driveline
P38 - you can have a longer wheelbase which may be better for utes (108" vs 100").

D2:
- GVM 2,825kg
- Kerb weight 2,200kg
- Allowable payload 625kg

P38:
- GVM 2780kg
- Kerb weight 2150kg
- Allowable payload 630kg

Every kg you add is one less you can carry. Neither of these vehicles are designed to be heavy duty, so they won't do a very good job of being a ute.

Would be getting a chassis extension to around 120 or 130" anyway so chassis length isn't such a drama.

Doesn't need to carry a great deal, so 600kg payload isn't really a problem, and potential for gvm upgrade if all engineering work is being done anyway.

Driveline options aren't a factor...would be getting repowered either way. Would be starting with a V8 auto as the conversion base whichever one I chose.

Is P38 alloy skinned? Might be a factor for the bodywork.
