Copied from other forum. Sorry for being lazy.

There I was minding my own business, chasing pedestrians up foot paths etc https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ and generally behaving like Scruby says and loh and behold I notice a new rattle in the engine.
 (Diesel haters please abstain here)

Specifics

130k's on the engine.
Doesn't change with A/C off.
ACE is fitted.
sounds like mettalic rattle or scrape.
audible just above idle and then some more until drowned out by the awsome power of the diesel beast. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
coming from turbo or centrifugal filter region.
May be pulley but unsure at this stage.
Sounds disturbing enough to start pulling things apart until I find it.

Anyone know of issues with the centrifugal filter letting go or am I just hoping that the turbo hasn't thrown in the towel. (no noticable reduction in wheel spinning power etc  )

Note- I have searched out some articles on the filter failures but none seem to have indicated an associated rattle.

Help

I had a similar rather concerning issue a while ago. Just had the 01 Td5 disco serviced the day before and travelled 160km for a wedding. Stopped for a pie and coke (real man food!) and a metal on metal hollow scrape was heard under the hood at idle. Nothing I could do at the time but worry  .

Tried phoning the service place (not Land Rover) but no one home. Dropped in on the next Monday and they said nothing was out of the ordinary. I persisted and made them take out the centrifugal filter. Sure enough rub marks on it. I think they were on the underside from memory.

The mechanic found the old one in the bin and there was a slight difference in the shape of the filter. I kicked up a bit of a stink  and asked them to replace it with a genuine filter. They did and I made sure they documented what happened and gave me a copy as I was about to leave on a trip to Broome via the Gibb River Road.

No problems since so I plan to go genuine with the centrifugal filter until I am confident with after market units.

Hope this may help in your situation.

Yep, if you had it serviced recently then they most likely used Non-genuine filter and that would be the issue!

Its disturdingly common.

Hi DEFENDERZOOK

The service guy did not say what brand it was. He said that mine was the first one he had and problems with. He showed me the non geniune filter and the land rover one and there was only a slight difference in the shape of the underside. Next time a service is due, in about 3,000km, I will ask if they have had any others with problems.

The culpirt has been found! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

and......

It must have taken a while for normal wear to reduce the clearance of the filter before it started to strike.

I shall be having a good talk to my local service centre who put this part in. For reference, the OLD part had no markings and the new part was a BRIT ? part. again not genuine I believe but I had to have something to replace it with.

Thanks to all for the guidance in helping find this.

Hi eckolsim,

Well found!

I have experienced that we 'rover owners need to be part Blood Hound, part mechanic, and a big part of a detective just to survive.

Maybe Land Rover named our vehicles "Discovery" for a good reason!

And I guess we need to 'Defend'(er) our rights from time to time

Yes...been there, done that

My filter had a hole in it about 3mm diameter after about 8k. I was not very happy. :x :x

But really a genuine LR filter is only about $2 more, so really why would you bother with aftermarket gear.

Cheers,
Lyndon.

I wonder what happens to the metal ground off the housing cover?
Does the filter separate (ie take care of) it, or does it end up between the big end shells and crankshaft?

You asked a good question sheff. This is why I ranted and raved at my service guy  .

He reckons that mine was only minor wear, and from what I saw it was. At least I had in writing what happened for future reference. They have a nation wide service guarantee, whatever that would mean in my case time will tell  .

Last time I did my filters I asked them about this issue. They don't use genuine but claimed they have never had this problem with them. They did ask me to ring them straight away if it did happen as they use the same filters when they do it. The guy is a friend of a friend so knows me and also knows I will send the mutual friend around if things go wrong.
