Hi all,
Since the question of 'holden engine in Landy, what are the issues?' comes up a fair bit, I thought it may be useful to post a picture of my S1 engine bay (minus engine) showing some of the various mods usually done to accommodate Holden engines. This formerly housed a 186 Red motor.

Notable areas are the engine mounting points; and the front crossmember, both of which have been moved. You can also see in this particular car, the gearbox cowling has also been changed slightly, as it also had a holden 'box.

Hopefully someone may find this a useful resource in future. Feel free to add any more comments!

PS these pics also show some other mods such as addition of coils etc, but the most common issue/question always seems to be about how much chassis alterations have been made, so I havnt listed every mod out.

May I as what wheel base is your Series One?
Interesting modifications. Possibly a home built arrangement.
Regarding the Holden gearbox, was the transfer case retained, or was the vehicle only two wheel drive?
With most common Holden conversions that retained the Land Rover gearbox/transfer case the only modification done was cutting/recessing the front cross member and radiator support panel, to allow the radiator to be moved forward.
The purpose built engine mounts that came with the conversion kit just bolted up to the existing chassis mounts.

Cheers, Mick.

Hi Mick.
a) Its a 1953 80"
b) Yes, I believe it was home built/modified, but by a guy who knew what he was doing. The engine mounting points on the chassis have actually been moved rather than adapted. You can also (just) see in pic #2, that a whole 'new' extended crossmember has been fabricated and welded on.
c) original transfer case (and 4wd capability) had been retained.

Fun fact- the front diff is original, but a Ford 9" was fitted to the rear.

So obviously the Ford 9 inch diff ratio matched the front Land Rover diff given it retained four wheel drive?

yeah, I can only assume it must do.. has never caused issues to date.
Personally im not a fan as it looks ridiculously large, but its a diff and it works so is staying for now.

I will (eventually) get around to posting a rolling build/progress thread in the S1 sub-forum since it wont be Holden powered any more, but heres a couple more
- Diff
- Engine pre-removal
- general
