The Def300 cyclindrical air filters cost $55 to replace whereas other flat rectangular filters cost around $20.

So, I figure why not change the Def300 setup to use cheaper filters? Perhaps use a Disco300 filter box?
Has anyone modified a Def 300 by mounting the filter box on the passenger side; where the air is actually required?

I'd like to sort this out before attaching a snorkel and finding it was on the wrong side![/b]

Umm, why not use a Donaldson, Fleetguard, Crosland, etc, element that costs in the region of $16-20 in the stock housing ??
I've been using a Donaldson element for years (pt. # P182052) that has the same OD and length, with a slightly smaller ID than the OE element (so you do have to be careful it is pushed all the way home and is sealing on the end.) It also uses the plastic vane pre-filter spinner arrangement and it fits neatly inside the Land Rover housing. ( It is designed to suit a Donaldson FWG 065012 Cyclopac housing, used on incalculable heavy duty engines over the last thirty odd years)
I've backed to back it with a K&N element and felt no difference (loss) in performance.

Thanks Rick. That sounds a simple solution and no worries with the quality of the filter either. Some follow-up questions:-

Do you get Donaldson filters at tractor or truck suppliers?
Do you replace them more often than OE type filters?
Where have you located the K&N filter?

Thanking you.

Go to the K&N website, they have a link to the Australian importers, bunch out in Eastern Creek West of Sydney. They do mostly hot up and race stuff, but sorted it out for me. I'd guess they'd post to you as well.

I went out one Saturday morning and one of the guys came out and helped me with it to make sure it was the right filter.

Good guys.

Cheers
Simon

The Donaldson element is sourced through my local parts supplier. They just happen to stock Donaldson.
The (UK made) K&N was through an old racing parts supplier mate of mine via the WA importer. The Sydney based importer abaddonxi is talking about is Rocket Industries.
If you really want a K&N I would sell you mine, (less than 20,000km use) but I personally don't think a K&N is a great idea for lots of dust and off road use.
Great race car air filter, (which is where I used to use them. K&N beat all comers the few times I've tested them years ago on the dyno) but their ultimate filtration and overall capacity don't really cut it for me.
An interesting link testing various filter elementsto suit a GM Duramax diesel is here http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm
Bear in mind that the outright results would vary depending upon application, and it is better for comparing media types.
