G'day all,
just a question out of interest...
what year did LR release the disco's and when did LR start putting diesels in disco's? was it right from the release date or was it around 1992?
cause my research tells me nothing about diesels in disco's untill 1994, the 300 tdi, when i've been talking to a bloke who has a disco that is a 1992 and a factory Tdi...
thanks in advance for your info guys!!!
cheers,
bryce

The Disco was first intorduced in 1989, but i think we got it in 1990 as the initial carby fed Disco didnt meet emissions, when the injected version was released we got it here. I think you are right about the entry of the diesel into the Oz market, 1991 or 92 was the year i think, but not to sure. matt

Sounds ok, find out how long it has been since it has had the timing belt done, if he/she has no idea knock $800 straight of to get it done, then so it yourself and save $500 in labour. Also make sure the oil has been changed on a regular basis. $7k sounds ok, but be thorough, and then bring it to the BBQ at my place in January so we can check it out and test it. Keep us informed. The first Discos to arrive here were the 91MY (HA). All V8 manuals, 3 doors with manual windows.
92MY (JA) saw the first 5 doors & the 200Tdi.

well, i went to see the vehicle...
very nice looking unit! drives well, no rust! everything worked (except some of the door handles need a couple of goes) 266, 000klms, with turbo timer.
the only thing is, no-one knew when the timing belt was changed last or the oil checked...
the bloke said he was open to offers, but it turns out he was only open to offers which were within $200-$300 of the advertised price, which puts it out of my price range...
the vehicle is...
1992 (march) 200Tdi Discovery, 5sp manual, 266 000klms, radio, a/c, power windows and mirrors, $6995. At weston wheels, cessnock rd WESTON. (02)4937588.
just in case anyone is interested. thanks for the info guys!!!

So no service history????
id be worried.....
timing belt is due at 100k intervals.
last oil?? damn that is bad.....
look at it this way.......
If you get it and the belt snaps before you get it changed you will be up for about $1k minimum and full rebuild max.
And if the oil was changed 30k ago then the only thing that will happen is premature wear.
it might be fine, but id be waving $6k under his nose.

Yeah, it was probably better you couldnt get it, i wouldnt be buying any diesel disco from someone who couldnt tell me when the oil was last done, the timing belt you could handle just do it asap, as long as the motor is running it obviously hasnt been a problem yet, but oil changes are to important. I was told when i was looking for mine "dont be afraid to walk away if something doesnt add up". Alot of the time the excitement takes over and everything you look at is perfect. So when something has faults you brain doesnt say its no good walk away because you are so keen to buy one. In the end you have probably saved youself thousands by walking away. A high km diesel engine with no service history is a timebomb waiting to go off. Good move mate, there are plenty more. Matt

Ace,
thanks for the wise words mate! i do get over excited about things like buying cars, so i don't see all the faults of the vehicle clearly, and sometimes i forget that...
thanks mate!

Hey mate, we all do it. I did it when i bought mine. I was also told never to buy the first one you look at, but i ignored that because mine has full history, no off road work etc. The best think you need to do is take someone along with you who is impartial and doesnt care either way. Good luck with it mate. Matt

The good thing about taking your wife or girlfriend or whatever is they generally dont have an interest so they dont care whether or not you come home with a vehicle. As a result you can always expect honesty. Itd all about someone bringing you back to reality and stopping you making a hasty spur of the moment decision you will regret. matt
