being dragged back into riding a pushie for exercise again so I have started to refurbish a bike I have had for a few years..

nothing to flash but isn't a cheapy and has some nice bits on it...

need to buy some tools as they only bike tool I think I have left in the tool box is a crank puller :p

Go the Park Tools. They're the best that's out there and what the bike shops use. Saying that some locally sourced stuff can be good too. We have the BBB torque wrench which has served us well.

There's a few good online sources for cycling gear. As Pocket Rocket said Wiggle and Chain Reaction are the main 2. I've also used Merlin Cycles and PBK on occasion. I tend not to buy too much from the US because postage is more expensive and takes longer to get here.

I do buy parts online, its the cheapest way if you're buying anything that has some $ involved and you know what you want.

For tools, I've always bought bike specific things just from the LBS and gained advice on what works well so that I don't end up buying crap.

Why not? Lycra shorts come in perfectly serviceable black or grey, you know, the garish colour schemes are quite optional. That and a loose fitting long sleeved shirt and you'll look quite casual. These for example are excellent quality and allow long hours in the saddle with no ghastly sweat rashes.

To be honest though, you would only need minimal bike specific tools, unless your bike is vintage.

As someone who races and services my own bikes (road and MTB, including suspension services) I only ever really use a chain whip, cassette removal tool and that's about it for specialist tools - you may need a bottom bracket tool, but only if you have a serviceable BB which is rare these days.

Wiggle recently bought ChainReaction, so prices should be very similar, make sure it's over 100 and you get free delivery.

Other good places are TBSM, Pushys are OK as well. Cell used to have a decent selection of parts and tools but they seem to be losing the online war and losing out on the shopfront to 99bikes which market to the I don't know what I am doing crowd and subsequently their staff know a bit less that f all from what I can tell.

If you are getting into fitness, I would say go to your LBS, have a chat. If they are decent enough they will look after you and will likely have club rides or something similar so you can ride with other people.
