So at 0130hrs the other morning after 24hrs + of no sleep I put 30 odd ltrs of PULP in to our TDV6 disco 3s..... all explanations about similarities of BP pump headers aside i basically messed up.
Luckily I realised as I put the pump back on the hook. I paid for the fuel and pushed the car off the pump and parked it and walked home.
Next morning after spending significant time googling all the horror stories we know exist I decided upon a plan of action.
1. buy new fuel filter to replace old one
2. siphon the fuel out of the tank with intention of refilling to the brim with Dieso.
hope and hope and hope that I didn't stuff the car.
this is what really happened.
removed transmission and fuel filter protection plates. identified the fuel filter was a different size to the one Repco had in stock. with no other option I decided to push ahead and remove the filter which was full or predominately diesel. ( after placing a rather large drain pan under that area of car.
Attempt to syphon tank, I think I'm still burping petrol dieso mix... this didnt work. tried jiggle syphon hose hand pumps ( x2) what to do now....
thinking thinking thinking... when you turn on the ignition the electric in tank fuel pump pressurises the line. so I gave it a turn and presto with the fuel filter off I had an instant diesel fountain under the car. Continued to do the same ( forgot to mention I pushed her out of the driveway and down the hill away from the servo in an industrial estate - it was gonna be messy)
That way I pumped 35 to 40 ltrs or so out of the tank until she no pump no more fuel MR....
filled the old filter with diesel, and put 10 litres in the tank. continued turning the ignition to start a couple of times and then with fingers and evertything else crossed went for the start, and lo and behold she started.
very gingerly I drove the short distance back to the servo, in all I put 89 litres in the tank. jumped back in and turned it over....turning turning turning nothing. thinking to myself I had done it now, gave her another crack, she started and I got a short distance before she showed an F on the odo screen ( s model only had 1 digital screen on dash) and died. turned her over again and she did it again - three times in total. the last time shut doen locked doors waited and started again,, and guess what ....
she ran like a bewdy. and in fact ( haven't started her today ) but just spent 2 days driving her down the south coast and back. an touch wood all seems ok.......
So I recon the small amount of pulp in the tank will make a very small difference to combustion and we are filling her up constantly for a while to dilute the tank even more.
Will replace the fuel filter a couple of times to get rid of any crap that's comes through from being cleaned with pulp, and drained to bottom.
I thought I would post it up here as its a good outcome against all of the $6000 nighmare stories..... I'm off to see if she starts now ...
