I recently replaced the EPB brake shoes in my 07 D3 following the instructions contained in "Bodsy's Brake Bible". All went OK until I came to the bedding-in process and I could not get the system to enter the bedding-in mode. After much fussing decided to simply drive between the specified speeds (30 - 47kph) and apply the EPB 10 times. EPB seems OK and holds vehicle on steep inclines.
Can anyone advise what difference it makes whether a D3 EPB is bedded in by entering the correct mode versus simply applying the EPB 10 times? No error messages have been shown

One other question regarding the EPB. Why do the brake linings wear out? It is supposedly just a parking brake and I have never used it in emergency situations

EPB doesn't come on when using it whilst moving - that's your ABS system braking for you..

The EPB bedding in mode actually forces the Park Brake Linings to engage the inner drum.

It took me a few tries to get it to work. You need to do the commands either faster or slower I can't remember. Be prepared for the back wheels to lock up after a few runs as the people in the car park gave me a few suspicious looks.
Would wear out pads if you used to drive off with EPB on which is a big no no.

It took me a few tries to get it to work. You need to do the commands either faster or slower I can't remember. Be prepared for the back wheels to lock up after a few runs as the people in the car park gave me a few suspicious looks.

Thank you Tombie for the enlightening information. As I mentioned I did attempt bedding in simply by applying the EPB 10 times without entering the "bedding in" process but will now try again to get the system engaged correctly. At least I now understand what to expect when using the EPB as an emergency brake!!

Thanks also to PerthDisco. I did run through the procedure 6 times and then varied it slightly just in case I misunderstood but no success. However will get back to making another attempt and will update this post

Hi Keni. I purchased the Disco two years ago so I have no idea what the original owner did but I have never used the EPB in an emergency or moved off from standing with the brake on. I did not encounter any warning signs until I heard a loud bang on off-side rear and a message centre "Parking brake inoperative". When I removed the drums I found the off-side had NO friction material on the shoe but large pieces were loose inside. The near side shoe was brand new!! Springs, retaining clips and shoes all sparkling clean.
Conclusion is that only one side was replaced before I purchased the vehicle.

What kind of ratfink would relace only one side?

However I can offer no explanation why the EPB reached such a dire state. I can say that it held the vehicle on very steep inclines with a fully loaded trailer indicating that the EPB works even when one shoe is new and the other worn out.

Hi PerthDisco. I tried again several times and eventually achieved success by inputting much faster. Previously after each failure I went slower thinking that the system needed time to think but the answer is to input fast and ignore the 10 second guideline.
