My 2012 Discovery 4 with only 46,000km on the clock, last Friday the 27th of January when started up showed "Gearbox Fault" on the display. I called Landrover Assist and they sent an RAA (South Australian roadside assistance group) tech out to look at the car, he looked (that is all he did, look) at my car and said he could do nothing and would order a flat bed tow truck. My baby went to the Adelaide dealer to be fixed. On Tuesday the 31st they rung me and said my car was fixed, apparently a software glitch. I have extended warranty but was told that I had to pay $187 for the upload of the new gearbox software as Landrover only pay if hardware is faulty (I will pursue this later). Well guess what yesterday (Friday 3rd Feb) I have a"Gearbox Fault" display again, about to ring Landrover Assist for round 2, will keep you all informed.

Find out the fault codes if you can.

I wouldn't be paying for the upload of any software.....

Mine had the software upgraded on it within warranty at no cost - unfortunately I don't have a record of the versions I'm sorry. But I certainly wouldn't accept that they wanted me to pay for a software upgrade on something that is still under warranty - even extended warranty. It's lot like the software is an option you have added after, int's an integral part of how these transmissions work - to try and separate hardware and software for warranty purposes is total bull**** in my view.

Particularly as it seems to have not fixed your problem!

This did happen to me once on the sand. I just turned the car off then back on and it was gone though..

It sounds like when my brake switch failed at 60,000km. They said it was a software problem, updated it and sent me on my way. The first time I used my brake it failed again and they had to flat bed it back to the dealer. The next time they correctly diagnosed the brake switch failure and fixed it properly.

My D4 has just showed this error the other day, car is driving fine. It does not come up all the time but will be calling the mechanic to get his opinion. Car is due for a service. Is there anything I can look for fluid wise or is this error to do with software?

thanks in advance.

Cheers

This vid shows the error sequence I was getting which includes the gearbox fault error. Faults would clear after a restart. Started off being infrequent enough to not bother me too much, but then started happening more often. Strangely, didn't happen when my wife was driving, just happened for me. Long story short, the indy I took the D4 to did some analysis and, without being 100% sure, replaced the brake switch. That was about 2yrs ago, problem has never happened since. Hope this helps.

Interesting, im getting an intermittent fault code U0128 that says lost comms with park brake module. No other faults or triangles on the dash.

AFAIK my MY11 D4 SDV6SE still has the original brake switch.

Is this related to the infamous brake switch issue?

I'm tempted to preemptively replace the switch....158311

Same problem here on 2014 D4 with ZF 8HP 8 speed gearbox (command wheel instead of stick). Enabling low range, returning to park, then restart fixed it for me.

Symptom
- started car ok, selected reverse and got message "gearbox fault" and yellow triange, message persists when returning knob to P, drive does not work either, engine revs but no movement, outside temperature -15C but no temp related problems before.
- several restarts did not work

Problem
No idea.

Solution
- put knob into neutral
- press low range. Again the "gearbox fault" plus the whole christmas tree lights up with all sorts of failures. Low range does not engage and low range indicator keeps blinking.
- put knob into park. Low range indicator keeps blinking.
- restart car and problem gone

Maybe time for a software update since this was the first model year with the ZF 8HP

Mine did it as well, while in Low Range and working hard.It also wouldn’t change gears, like some sort of limp mode.
I switched the engine off, waited probably a minute, turned it on and never saw the message again.
I doubt it was the auto overheating as I presume a red light on the dash would come on before it goes into limp mode.
