G`day ,

TD6 M57

is there a need to disconnect the battery when replacing the fuel filter ?

I`d have thought as long as the ignition is off , there would be nothing going on at the filter .

At what kms would you recommend to replace it ?

It's a straightforward job and the ignition can best be off.

I change mine every 12 months or 20k. We have pretty good fuel sources locally and you can't be too careful with common rail systems.

Thanks ,

sounds good to me .

While your there , do you think the trans filter should be the same or is that too often .

Have no intent to tow much with it i use the ever reliable RRC for towing usually .

Thanks , still a bit wary of it .

40k intervals for trans is fine. I use a penrite full synthetic and change it at 20k because i can, and i sometimes tow 3t, and it is remapped😎

It won't need doing yet mate, I put a brand new one in there the week before you picked it up. :)

And it won't throw a fault code - the plug going to it is for the WIF - normally open so pulling it off keeps it in the same state as when it's in normal service.

I Changed my last week with the battery connected. RAVE says to disconnect it, but this is purely for workshop safety reasons, like sparks when working on fuel systems, but that is very unlikely as diesel doesn't explode like petrol,

Thanks Gav ,

just wasn`t sure what kms people changed them .

Not long changed the engine oil and filter and filter socket you gave me made it easy also checked the breather thing for piece of mind and it`s all nice and clean looking in there .

Replaced the air filter ( mahle $17.24 ) though it barely needed it , probably could have blown it out but i`ve come across a place in the UK that sells service stuff at about a quarter or less of what things cost here , not for every thing but alot , like mahle oil filter for 3.39 UK around $5.50 AU same thing here is around $25 AU and bearmach stuff is less again and even with the cost of air it works for me .

Not holding my tongue the right way to reset the service thing but i`ll get there . I think it`s just a matter of following the instructions properly which i`m not but it`s not a concern .

Cheers

Yeah, dumb stuff like that. There's no spark potential from that plug - it's a zero volt ground input that's normally open - even if it was closed you'd be looking at a few micro amps flowing to trigger the ECU.

I always took a couple of goes to reset the service counter too. :D

I always changed he fuel filter every second service so around 20,000KM which is way inside the service intervals.

Has it been treating you well overall? I haven't seen any posts saying otherwise. I miss it to tell you the truth but I'm glad is getting used rather than sitting forlornly in the Driveway like it was here.

Hasn`t been doing anything it shouldn`t as yet .

It surely is being used but it is very easy to and i guess a bit over 10,000 km and why the need of an oil change .

The only thing it`s done is eat the fan belt and it likes to get dirty and i`m not used to washing vehicles , i usually give them a bath at least once a year but this colour requires more washes only because it looks better that way .

When we got it home there were alot of comments on its looks and some from people that i wouldn`t have though would even notice .

I had to tell people how old it was and they were surprised as they though it was of a recent age .

It also attracts women , the other day we had to take or daughter and grandson to a nearby town for a check up for the grandson .

I was sitting out side the medical clinic in the car waiting and i watched a lady come out of the doors searching in her bag , she walked up to the car and opened the passenger door , i said hello and she looked up with a horrific look on her face and shut the door . She then reopened the door and said , i thought you were my husband with a smile this time .

Turned out they have an L322 a similar colour which was parked about 3 bays across the other side of a van . I can understand her mistake because they are few and far between around here .
