so how do change them to oil instead of grease?????

I'd not recommend doing that Ray. Years ago the Army went to packing the wheel bearings with grease rather than oil on the old Series 2s because the seals were forever failing and oil ****ing out everywhere. Perhaps a thicker grease may help. I'd also stick to waterproof grease if you're not already.

i've herd a few stories of guy's running them in oil and never having any drama's with them

just sick and tied of doing them every 6months or so :evil: :evil: :evil:

So the issue is the mud. Not the bearings. Why or how is the mud getting in?

If you can't keep mud out, you are never going to keep oil in!

theres no drama runing oil insted of grease much better but it sounds like you are geting mudie water in through the wiper seal on the big crome ball when you run grease the grease picks up all the fine bits of dirt in the water and then works just like a grinder on your wheel bearings

pull everthing off tight down to the axle end clean everthing up put new wiper seales in and dubble the steal plate that holds the wiper seal (every 110 axle we built we put two of the big steel plates on and no more problems with leaking) i guess you are already runing breathers on the swivle houseing so this should fix all your problems

Ray,
pull the hub and stub off the swivell ball, can check the cv's and
axles while in there.
in the back of the stub axle theres a needle roller bearing and a seal.
use a screwdriver to pull the seal out.
put it all back together jobs done.

the only place mine leaked is the bottom swivell pin(the two bolts)
i drained it out sealed the bolts with 510 loctite and bobs ya uncle!

this is the swivell ball housing. at the bottom you can see 2 bolts, remove
clean and seal.

my manual says that there should be 2 plates also, but the ones on mine only had one. and i can now see why 2 are required! one just aint
enough to hold the seal in tight.

Why not pressurise the swivels and hubs with a small ARB? compressor..
You wil blow some oil out but better than bearings every six months.
I do not see how you will ever keep mud out any other way.

Hiline, it is more than likely the crap hub seal used with the greased hubs (IIRC, pt. # FTC 4785 ??)
What you need is pt. # RTC3511. It uses a double lip, spring energised seal. Only use a genuine one, the aftermarket ones I've seen aren't very good.
<edit> it has to be mounted 4mm below the hub face</edit>
I'm using these seals all around, oil lubed hubs at the rear and greased at the front. If you want to make them oil lubed, you will have to remove the inner axle seal, and run oil in the CV's (getting the correct oil height can be a bit of a guess as the level plug has been deleted in the later model swivel housings)

I had a Ser2A that had original leather gaitors on the swivels and tailshafts,VERY GOOD bits of gear.
