Hiya'll.
As I've said a few times I'm interested in fitting a ZF to my '94 300Tdi Defender Station Wagon. Next year when I return to Oz I'm gonna catchup with DefUte and have a look at his setup
However I saw this interesting post from Reads90:

But the secret to fitting a 300 TDI into a classic range rover is to put a 200 TDi disco auto biox to it . Then they really fly and i mean fly. The 300 TDi auto is crap with the 300 TDi engine . Where as the 200 TDi auto is lower gearing for the less power of the 200 TDi engine. Put this on to a 300 TDi and the combination is fantasic. But will not lose top end will still push along at 140k plus.
I am just wondering if anyone has any comments on this ? Also if it would be possible in a Defender... as my understanding was the Bell Housing on the 200Tdi ZF auto was different to the Bell Housing on the 300Tdi ZF?
Also would it be possible to "adjust" the governor (or whatever it is) in the 300Tdi ZF to change it such that it performed like the ZF in the 200Tdi :?:

The reason the 200 TDi box goes better on the 300 TDI is because the gearing is differant to the 300 TDi auto gearing. The 200 TDi did not have as much Kw power as the 300 so they had to make the gear work for them to get enough power out of it to make it easy to live with.
This is why when you put the 200 auto on the 300 is goes really well.
As for the tunnel and stuff. My brothers 90 has a Range Rover 4.6 V8 in it with a Auto Borg warner ( with Viscous) box in it. You just remodel the tunnel on the 90/110 . It is easy to do and well wroth it
After all the tunnel is just a bit of bent metal anyway https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Thanks Reads :-)
Dunno what our ADR would have to say about it though  Ah well I'll cross that bridge when I come to it - hopefully sometime next year https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Hi Folks,
Would also be interested in details of the box for the 200tdi (Auto)...as , as i am aware, the auto was NOT available here on the disco until Post Feb 1994 (300 tdi update)....so was this a uk spec only??
I previously owned a 300tdi auto, which my father now owns, and he would be interested in such a gearing change, as it's a real pain to get rolling sometimes.
Reads,....is the gearing different for just 1ST & 2ND in the auto ?? and details of ratios.
thanks, and sorry for the hijack

Yep, no 200tdi auto's only manuals, we only got the tdi auto with the late 93 update when the 3.9 v8 and 300tdi came out.

Ahh we had 200 TDi auto's from day one untill the 300 tDi came along
200 TDi had 107 BHP and the 300 had 111 BHP
So they did have a bit more. But the tore band was better in the 300 TDi

Well that would throw a spanner in the works.
If, and I say if, one was to import a reconditioned 200Tdi ZF gearbox - what would the ADR say? Would I be allowed to fit it to the vehicle with just an Engineering cert.?
Remember I will be based in Qld.

mmmm do you have to tell them we don't in the Uk https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Aslong as it goes and passes the MOT every year they don't give a dame anyway

G'day Reads,
The problem is the insurance companies. They'll use anything they can to wriggle out of a claim :x
As such it would need to be properly certified to stop them from doing so 8O

mmm understand but as it is a Land Rover product i can't see too much of a problem.
I mean after the heaps of s**t i have seen driving on the road in Brisbane , doing that to a truck would be nothing. The amount of Toyota camarys that look about 10 years past their sell by date amazes me. In the Uk you would be arrested and have the book throwen at you for driving a car like that.

dont think you would be able to tell the diff between a 200 or 300 tdi auto from the outside.
when you get it engineered, then its from a Disco tdi!!!
think you have been living in Switzerland too long!!!

yeap exactly. you worry too much https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
We used to put 4.6 range rover engines in 90's and stuff and put a 3.9 V8 cover on them. Insurance companys will open the bonnett and look and not strip the engine down and mesure the stoke of the piston https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Quite possibly, which is why I'm coming back in April :-)
I have my meeting with the HR department tomorrow where I get to resign - yippee! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Then because my boss and I get on we've organised that I only have to work until the end of Jan. but will keep getting paid until my "official" leaving date of the end of March (my termination notice period is 3 months - seems fairly standard over here 8O )
Either way I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, and looking forward even more to the end of Jan. when I start 2 months of house-cleaning
Thanks for all the info and tips guys, I've taken it to heart.

ahhh the MOT is more indepth than Rego - so hence prob more important to have engineers reports in Aus than in the UK.
I used to dread the annual MOT's - bloody examiner with his hammer on the chassis etc, then I have the first NSW Rego check on my Disco and laughted when it didn't even get put on the hoist!!!

I've sent Ashcroft transmissions (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/) an email asking a heap of questions.
I'll let you know the answers as soon as I get them.

Ok I've got a response back from Ashcroft Transmissions (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/) and their answers are as follows:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>> Do you supply the centre console for your conversion?
Yes, same as the Frogs one
> I have rock-crawler gears in my transfer case - these won't be affected
> by converting my Defender to an automatic will they?
No,
> Also I have heard that a 200Tdi ZF fitted to a 300Tdi is a better match
> (power / driving wise) because the 200Tdi ZF has different gearing...
> do you know if this is true and if so can you supply such a kit?
not true, same box.[/b][/quote]
So according to them the ZF in the 200tdi and 300tdi were the same ratios?
