Just got my chassis hot-dipped gal'd and deciding next move. Options:

1. powdercoat entire chassis black (semi-gloss or matte??)
2. Spray entire chassis with Speedliner
3. Speedline rear bumper and front caps, then once fully assembled, spray waxy/tar undercoating to hide gal.

Thoughts?

Personally I would leave it with just the gal finish. I would definitely avoid the unbody tar products.

Why?

Basically because the Gal is the only protection you need. If you keep it clean, inside and out, the gal chassis will outlive the rest of the vehicle.

The underbody tar products can be a pain in the ass as moisture can get between them and the frame - especially in joints etc.

If you're worried about the aesthetics and want to hide the gal for that reason - i get that, and I'd probably put a 2k type spray product on it - i've just done a chassis in raptor liner, though a high gloss 2k would probably be a better choice than raptor as it leaves a bit of a rough finish ( 2k is a 2 part paint that requires a hardener - it gives a much better protection than something that comes straight out of a can, as the paint chemically bonds, unlike a 1k )

You'll need a tie coat over the gal before you put a paint ontop - I think you could possibly use upol grip #4, depending on what you're putting ontop of it.

I have thought about this exact problem many times. Not done it yet though.
Basically i dont like covering metal with anything that may hide whats happening underneath.
So best for me would be HD gal followed by a liberal spray of ACF-50. This will leave a clear un noticed coating also making the surface easier to keep clean. The gal wont need it but the bolts and bolt holes will be better off. Once a year clean and re spray with a couple of cans would be all it then needs. A thick bed liner type product is the last thing i would use and on the second hand market i doubt anyone would be keen to buy it because it could be hiding a multitude of sins. Sticky tar products are a mess and just gum everything up. Hate them and have spent hours trying to remove from my defender.
