duff

This may be a strange question for a 4WD Forum,,,

BUT what is the sorts of top speed people are getting from there Disco TD5. 8O
Have any mods made any noticeable changes in top speed ?

Standard engine, auto, standard tyres, 2" lift, bar, fully loaded I've had 160km/h flat out on level roads. And before all the do gooders jump up and down, it was in the NT and the roads were clear.

I'm now chipped and intercooled, though have not had the opportunity to fang it again, but I suspect it'll go lots quicker. 8)

Even an ugly V6 Magna wagon hire car I had last year cruised extremely comfortably at 180kmh thru the NT stretch. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I hear you duff, it was however an extremely well balanced ride at 180 (Nissan 350z) and could easily have done more, it was more the fact that I was travelling at that speed on a norrow road and thought I should be sensible and back off.......got kids to look after and all  But, having travelled at that speed I am still amazed that a. the defender got there and b. it wasn't a white knuckle ride........good effort for giving it a go but you wont catch me trying to get that out of my D2  I'll buy another 350z for those sorts of speed 8)

The last time I exceeded 180 kph was in one of these:

http://www.alfa75.info/Alfa75%203.0%20V6%20QV%20-%2002.jpg

On the road to Coonabarabran....

At that speed the thing sat down on the road and said faster.

Then there was the blow dry drive after the Sunday morning clean... the hill climb up the old Pacific Hwy from Brooklyn to Hornsby....

The sound of the 3.0 V6 that just wanted to keep spinning until the rev limiter over ruled.

Now I am getting nostalgic

I wonder if I can buy it back

It was assembled like a first timer's airfix kit

There's actually a warning in the D3 handbook advissing that its not a sports car and shouldn't be driven as such. Maybe they should put one in the Fenders handbook as well!

My GPZ1000 was stable at 260kph, but slowing down again was interesting.

Now the Forester at 160kph on a gravel road; stable and totally in control (as long as the roo's stayed away!)

The gearing doesn't change, nor does the govenor ... at 4500 RPM

Ergo ... say 100kph at about 3000 rpm ......... that gives a max possible speed of about 150 kph at 4500 rpm .........

Sorry Guys this will be offensive BUT
My old stage 1 Series 3 Land Rover with an unrestricted 3.5 litre V8 will still pull 150-160 Kmh

In the Territory so Its quite legal, I use to work for a company that regularly travelled from one site to another in a Camry in excess of 200 Kmh
(about 1200 km one way) despite all the brain washing in the Eastern States and the revenue raising publicity there are times that high speeds can be travelled safely with out incident.

Merry Christmas

I would agree with Hi line on this one. A defender is capable of those speeds but Ive only seen it with chev converted and plently of HP and suspension work.

We have the police doing a speed trap last year at one of our races and the top speed was 197kph and thats offroad!

I only managed 139kph but still had plenty left. Ive hit 170kph in other races.

see http://www.offroadoz.net.au/Events/WA_Even.../speed_trap.php (http://www.offroadoz.net.au/Events/WA_Events/2005/Rd_5_Hyden_Humps/speed_trap.php)

for real world speeds in 4wds and other off road machines.Car 832 is a GQ patrol and it was clocked at 178kph

So,, is it safe to say that a standard Average Disco should get 150-160 kmh ? on a level average day. :?:

Has anyone had a chipped Td5 disco at its top speed and if so what kind of speed are we talking. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I understand that the peak improvement from the chip in top gear is at about 80-90kmh (torque), but there should be an increase in top speed from the increased hp, I hope. 8)

There is heaps of gearing left before the govenor limits the disco at about 4850rpm, I guess you could with ,,,endless HP,,, do about180-190 before the govenor acts........ :? Again, I do not say this is achievable with the 145KW the chip gives you,, but I am intereseted to hear what people have done in a chipped disco. :?:

Guys,
Unless you live in the territory, top speed is irrelevant. Chipping is about torque. I went from 300Nm to 450Nm and can climb the range in 5th gear at the legal limit. Thats impressive!
It also tows the 1500 kg caravan effortlessly. Thats useful!

Top speed? who cares. Beyond 110 klm/hr you are looking at losing your licence, in QLD anyways.
Even if you drag race, torque is the figure you want to increase.

had my Fender chipped a week ago, 30000ks on odometer, 150ks comes up pretty easy, and feels a lot faster. We are talking indicated top speed here, I want Hilines speedo! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ That said I have heaps of stuff bolted to the thing, so heaps of drag. I reckon 180km would be acheivable given enuff road and insanity.

There is always a party pooper amongst the mix to spoil the fun and bring reason to the exaggerated discussion - I was going to add that a fender or a discovery will only get above 160kph if being towed by a L series Freelander but I guess Roscos quote makes it irrelevant - however the freelander is doing 2700 rpm at 100kph which means it will do 166 at readline or 185 on the rev limiter.

The torque almost go's without saying,,,,,,,, it is fantastic to get heavy lumps going https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ,,,,,POI (mind if you are drag racing then the HP will get you over at the top end) https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ but back to the original point.

Can any of you guys that actually have the chipped TD5 tell me if the increase in Torque and Horse Power is reflected in the top speed. in theory it should.
My TD5 has had its ecu chipped and I then towed my van for a 100 odd k's felt better https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ , then drove for about 30 mins in the rain without the trailer felt good https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ , then broke down in Mackay  .
Two belt pulleys and the gearbox have been changed under warranty https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ . now it feels swifter(just) up to 140kmh and then eventually gets to about 160kmh, but the improvement is not great :? , infact I am so unimpressed that I am thinking that the dealer has flashed it back to standard  and the improvement is only from the gearbox and pulley change.

This is why I ask the question.... Top speed is easier to compare over the internet than 0 to 60 times which would indicate clearly the increased torque. we all hold our feet flat more or less alike. We press the button on a stop watch quite differently i have found. 8)
However if everyone wants to quote their 0 to 100 times I might even get an indication. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I know I could just get the computer plugged in and checked,, but the nearset one is 830km's away and much of the road is a bit wet now. 8O

How about old 4 speed Carbied V8 Rangies? How fast have any of you had one of them?

Last night i had mine doing an indicated 165ish, before I ran out of road. I might have been able to go much faster, the engine has a bit of a performance cam and was only doing 4500rpm, and it revs to 6500rpm before it valve bounces...

I wonder what it could do on a longer straight?

Be buggered on any corners though, especially with soft springs and no sway bars...

And this was done on a deserted stretch of back road mind you...I am all about public safety.
