Maybe it's just me, but I have noticed that a lot, if not all, car adverts these days seem to think that the most important thing about a car is how "Connected" it is?
Seems you have to be able to talk to your car? Some women with an odd Indian sounding name has to talk back? Apparently drums play? Jeeeze, even LR think you are so useless you can't arrange your seats without your phone.
Obviously I have my priorities all wrong.
Acceleration, handling, comfort, off road ability, practicality etc, seem to not count at all?
If the car has a stereo, plays CD's & a radio that can find the ABC I'm as connected as I want to be while driving.
Rant over,
back to my cave.

I dislike it from the point of view i am paying for it and dont necessarily need it.Other than that i am quite relaxed about it. How ever did we used to manage before we had all this stuff?!
cheers,

Haha,, same. I had to spend all that money on a top notch unit, to never use it. [bighmmm]
Leeannes car is so connected, Ford Kuga (top spec thingy), when she's about to leave for somewhere, it sends a msg on her phone telling her how long a drive she's got,,, generally to work and back.
I got a similar msg on mine once, got no idea why, how,, but as I was about to walk out the door, my phone went off (??)

Agree 100%. The worst bit is that these new cars rely on your smart phone to do everything - not many even include Sat Nav in their vehicles now - it's all 'car play' or some such thing where it uses your phone to navigate with. Forget your phone, no Navigation and a lot of other things.
It save the manufacturers a fortune and then they sell it to you like it's a 'must have'
This is one reason we bought SWMBO new car when we did late last year as the rep said that the new model would loose Sat Nav, heated and cooled seats and a couple of other things but have enhanced smart phone features....
**** that.... He agreed, but said he would have to learn how to sell that when it happened.

Would I be wrong in thinking that, in the event of needing a Roadworthy Certificate or similar for reselling the vehicle, all these little, magic fadunkers have to be working?

surveys say, the people that watch tv ads, want smartphone connection.
the people who care about Acceleration, handling, comfort, off road ability, practicality etc etc, dont watch tv.

What type of "Acceleration" are we referring to here? I mean, this is a Land Rover forum!

All this connected stuff is the preparation for the day when big daddy will be watching you & managing you remotely by way of fines & infringement notices. Your car will also stop when not serviced by an authorised stealer. Advertisers will be able to better target their junk mail based on where you have been & how you drive.
Why don't they jam mobile phones when the phones are in a moving car?

So does the law over here, and as far as I'm aware - in every other state in Australia too. [bighmmm]

As Eevo said, quite legal to use the mobile if you don't touch it. I can make and recieve calls without touching mine, so quite legal. I can actually text without touching it too, but I don't as the voice recognition is a bit iffy.
I have replied to texts with 'ok' or similar as the car lets you do it all by voice.

They tell you about all the fabulous connectivity (which you may not need),while secretly removing the spare wheel and not saying a word about it.(even though you might need it). It's all about making you more reliant on others who are there to fleece you.
I'll be driving my Defender until I'm unable to. Hopefully, I'll be dead soon after.

I've installed an airbag in my defenders headrest and hooked it to a secret switch under my steering wheel. When my geriatric leg snaps in two trying to depress the clutch I'll flip the switch!
(Joking!)
But seriously bury me in my defender embalmed in ep90

I own a Defender. It's connected... with the environment.
I drive on beaches with the windows down, and enjoy it and the sea breezes.
I drive through the bush windows down and can hear the birds and such.
"Modern 4wd's I often see with windows up and air con cranked, no doubt listening to Pandora (whoever she is) or some such smartphone thing I hear advertised.
Oh and if I lose smartphone reception - I don't die. That's handy too.

I guess these connectivity features are important to many new car buyers. Not all are luddites.
BTW, I think using the phone for mapping is a really good idea. Its annoying that proprietry maps go out of date, cost to update and will probably not be supported after 5 or 10 years. Google maps hardly dates and is brilliant in its navigation which considers road congestion and accidents and gives options. Likewise Siri is awesome too, I love the ability to start with "Hey Siri" and then tell the phone what to do, read and dictate back a text reply etc.

Hey Slunnie, I'm not a luddite. I got a new iPhone the other day and it tells me my 'car'(The Rover), is at work, 60m away. (It's in the shed)
Now where would I be without that valuable information. It'll even provide me with a map so I can get there without losing my way. I'm connected!!

I've got a smart phone and apparently we have bluetooth in the Defender's and never the two shall be connected. [bigsmile]
We even updated our maps in December. We bought a brand new Streetsmart Road directory. [bigsmile1]Unfortunately like a smart phone without reception its useless. Its in the 90 residing at the dealers for the last 2 1/2 weeks. [tonguewink]

What is this stuff about cars being "connected" ... I'm confused. Until I got my ****ty old Range Rover classic the most modern car I'd owned was a 1985 Citroen CX GTi Turbo .... As always, I'm just pleased if it just starts and drives for me .... The same deal works for the POS '92 Range Rover ... if it starts and drives for me ... and the drivers window will go up and down ... I'm a happy man :) What more could you want ? Especially when I'm crawling through the bush in low range with the center diff lock in as a part of my morning school run.

I'm not a luddite, well, maybe a little bit?
I have no problem with techno advances, auto wiper, auto lights, air bags, DSC, HID, all very good advancements to name just a few.
I just find that basing most of, or the complete advertising of a car around it's "Connectivity" or other useless tricks is Naf!
To me it's a car, there are a lot more important things I care about than if my smart phone will talk to it.
I'm not about to buy a new car but I like keeping up & reading about them, being advertised to that a car is the best connected would not lead me to bother to investigate a car further.

My wife bought me a Bon Jovi sat nav. Thankfully we’re halfway there!
A sign at the local mall car-park said “Thieves want your sat nav”. I just thought, “well, they can get lost.”
I just bought the new Fleetwood Mac GPS. It’s utter rubbish. It just says “you can go your own way”.
“Where would we be without the sat-nav?”
Just bought a new U2 sat nav!I've had to take it back though. The streets have no name & I still haven't found what I'm looking for!!

Notice how the car ads now have perky female presenters, first Ford and now Toyota, and women don't care about how fast it goes, but they like toys like sat nav and reversing cameras. The companies have realised that women control most decisions about which car to buy.

If these super tech vehicles are anything like my electronic devices , I would torch the thing. My fm tuner on the stereo won't hold a signal , the wireless internet drops out randomly , the iPad freezes up , this is the third attempt at this post. And a simple device like my iPod is basically deemed non repairable. So what will the resale values be once these vehicles reach the end of their designed lives ?

John Cleese is available from Tom Tom - I have him on mine. :)
It's quite good but there are only a few jokes he does that come up time and again depending on what you're doing, but much better than the default voices.

With my job bluetooth is a must.
And I love Google maps.
The last few months most days I've been averaging upwards of 60 calls (in and out) a day, so any time in the ute I'm talking.
Then there's bloody emails and texts.
