Very nice vehicle, sits between the Evoque and the Sport - the tech is amazing:

Has anyone found out what platform this is based on or whether it is something completely new? The mechanicals look pretty similar to the FPace, with longitudinal mounted engine and the same engine choices. Much nicer body though in my opinion, which looks like a scaled down Range Rover Sport.

Doesn't appear to be a low range option but a rear ediff is available standard on some models and optional on others and it does have TR2 amongst the many goodies available.

When I hear "Velar" I think of one of these:

That is what they are named after according to the advertising I was sent.

Bob, from what I understand it is a completely new platform. I think this gives a bit more perspective on where they are going with trim levels on Range Rover vs Discovery. The new Discovery has move up to the current RR trim and the next generation of Range Rovers will follow this one and beyond.

While these are stunning vehicles and equally capable to go with it, there is no way I would be keen to get it muddy inside.

Bring on the new Defender - hopefully, while being new with all the mod cons that go along with that, it will be practical.

That's exactly where the name came from:

Bob, looks like you are spot on, It seems it does share is platform with the Jaguar F-Pace platform (Jaguar iQ[AI] (D7a)). Not sure of what the Land Rover model ID is ("L" code).

It seems Range Rover has now has become a brand? RR used to be Range Rover made by Land rover, part of Land Rovers model line up.
Now days, Range Rover has different sub models. Sport, Evoque, the Velar, completely different models.
You used to think the full size RR was the flagship, now its name is used on sub models. Same as Discovery, they bring out a new Freelander replacement and call it Discovery Sport, it's nothing like a proper Discovery. Mistubushi follows with the Pajero Sport, nothing like a proper Pajero.
Marketing.LOL

Looking in more detail at the info on the LR web site last night, they seem to have a different transfer case on the Velar than the FPace. The FPace has a road orientated AWD system with drive biased to the rear, 80/20 I think. The Velar has a 50/50 transfer case with drive apportioned to the wheels with grip. Reading between the lines this seems to be the same as the Discovery and the FFRR with the ediff in the transfer case. Maybe only an easy step to incorporate low range at a later date if the market wants it??

They won't be able to build these quick enough to keep up with the demand.

A mighty handsome vehicle.

Yeah, I wouldn't want one but they are perfectly placed for people who don't want an Evoque but find the Sport too big and expensive. I reckon they will fly out the door and if they are a spin off from the FPace, a bit of marketing genius at much less development expense than a brand new platform.

Previously they would have had a choice of the FPace or the Discovery Sport in Jaguar LR products. This car would be a perfect fit for lovers of the RRS shape and who want a smaller RR.

This has all the latest goodies, And for reference it is the same aluminium architecture D7a Chassis as the Jaguar f-pace.
That is where the similarities end.

The Newest item is the 2.0L 'Ingenium' petrol engine, better than the current 2.0L, made by JLR (according to them)
