Hi Guys,
are there any reliability/maintenance issues the 2012 Sport SDV6 suffers from? My parents are taking theirs on a caravan trip from Perth to Kunnunara.
from what I've researched they are quite reliable.
Cheers Paul

Pretty open ended question. How bigs the caravan how many k's on the RRS etc etc. Has it been regularly serviced and so on. If it is serviced and checked out prior to trip it should be reliable. But having RAC whatever it is in Perth gold cover is not a bad option no matter what you drive.

Paul if they've owned it for a while, know the car, have had it checked over during regular servicing, and at that age would be low mileage, I think it's low risk. The 2012 is the last of that shape RRS so pretty well sorted I think. Not that the earlier RRS had big problems. Also, that's a pretty flat drive from memory. So should be easy towing.
Engine bearing failure on the tdv6 has been recognise by LR in a technical bulletin. But that is rare given the number of vehicles produced, and not something I would worry about.
There is a sticky somewhere on trip spares for a D3/4/RRS. They should look at that list.
I wouldn't have any concern doing a trip in a 2012 RRS.

Thanks Pete,
Mate you pop up all over the place
didnt know about the bearing issue, will check it out.
I wonder how they go will intercooler hoses, until I changed mine to silicone on the Vogue TDV8 they were a problem every 12 months.

No worries. There's no real way of checking if there's a bearing problem. A new D4 failed in the 1st few mths of ownership. Others have failed later. It's a rare event in reality and so unlikely to be a problem. I would just take rescue tape for the intercooler hoses.

We did the big loop from brisbane in 2014 (18,000 klm) in our 2010 model including Tanami, western Gib River rd & many National parks with our 3 ton Van. Only issue was a tyre being taken out with a rock. That car had approx 90K on it at the time. We have just returned from a 3K trip in Western Qld with our 2012/MY13 RRS and again only issue was a tyre.

Hi There,

Meccles is right on the money, I service my RRS regularly, checked everything I could, drove to Broome last year and the alternator failed in Denham on the way back. TDV8, 150,00 klms on the clock, not to many. Random failure. The service from RAC was fantastic. The local mechanic had a look under the bonnet and told me "he wasn't going in there" and shut the bonnet, RAC then got my vehicle beck to my home address in Semi-Rural Perth for nothing, the transportation of the camper trailer cost me $500 excess which to me was worth every cent.
You can check everything to your hearts content if anything does catch you out it will be something you didn't or couldn't check, same with any vehicle really. TRS in Adelaide will get anything you need (usually) to you at a cost as long as you are where there is a mailing service.
Sure they will be fine, have a good trip.
Cheers Marty

I wouldn't worry too much about reliability of it. My younger bro has one and he thrashes it... and when I say thrashes I mean thrashes! Had a couple of little niggles but nothing to worry about.
He loves the cars ride and comfort, hates the black smoke out the back when he's driving "assertively" ([bighmmm]) but quite often goes between his place in PP, NSW and Adelaide to see his boy at what for me would be record time and has never had a worry.
I suspect your oldies are going to be travelling main roads anyway so they won't have any troubles. And probably wouldn't off road either. Maybe just a check over by a reliable indie to put your mind at rest.
