View Full Version : Aces BBQ VII- 7-8th January
Ace
24th December 2005, 04:34 PM
Hi guys, as posted earlier this month the next Ace's BBQ will be on the 7-8th of January 2006, the weekend after new years.
The Plan-
Arrive by 10am on the saturday and head up Mt Airley by 10:30am, arrive at the base of Mt Airley by 11am, head up and explore the area, there will be walking involved so be prepared to so some. If there is time we will come back Via Turon National Park and come out near portland. Then head back to my place for some food and refreshments.
Sunday morning, what we do on the sunday is really up to the group, we can discuss it on the saturday night, but Jenolan has been suggested again as there were heaps more tracks to explore that we saw last time, and they were fun to. Finish on the sunday when ever we want and head home.
Can anyone wanting to come please post here so i can get an idea of numbers. Matt

Oh, ok, let us know what the cause is when you find out? Is it using any oil?
If scouse is into fixing lights he can do mine before we go out. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

hi ace
just readin your description of the bbq areyou guys camping somewhere or are you just meeting up on the sat going home then meeting up again on the sunday??
either way not sure whether we are going to be able to come as the disco being the only car at the moment we can't afford to do any real damage!
being as though we don't have any tools at the moment (they are on the ship with the ninety)
but aside from that we don't have any rescue gear and it would be a race to get some rescue points on the car.....we shall see what happens
the plus side is me and my boyfriend are both off work. so if we can't make it we could sit staring at the wall all day wondering what a nice time we might of had 8O
cheers

Hi Dullbird
Don’t worry about recovery gear there will be more than enough to go round but you wont need recovering as there’s always an easy track round any hard bits
and if your camping gears on the boat don’t worry there will be enough of that to go round as well
Gotta be better than staring at the walls
see you on the weekend

dullbird The only damage should be from being stupid like me last time but the vehicle was still able to be driven home. Its a great way to meet the group and do some exploring.

Hi Dullbird, we will be camping at my place, i have 5acres 10km out of lithgow. I should be able to arrange some indoor space if necassary, I live on a block with a house and single room flat and a 2 room flat (mine), mum and dad own the lot. The house was empty, but mum and dad both have jobs here now so they are moving gear into the house, the room in the flat is spare so we should be able to squeeze you in. Failing that a cheap 2 person dome tent will get you out of trouble, you wont need cooking gear i have a BBQ at home and scouse and i have portable BBQs to cook lunch on the track, as Tony said there is enough recovery gear between all of us to manage without you needing to bring any. As for recovery points- do you have a towbar? That will serve as a rear recovery point, and it is very easy to fit a couple jate rings to the lower bolt holding the bumper/bullbar on, if you get them during the week we could fit them in 20 mins before we leave.
Now the track- its challenging, but non damaging if care is taken, i did this track a few weeks ago as a recce with two other members, each of us in stock discos appart from each having a 2in lift, but i have done the track without the lift and didnt have a problem. One disco, driven by Magic (we cant say his real name https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ) had highway tyres and was driven by someone who had only been off road twice in his life and he managed fine.
Ok, i think that is all the things covered, dont think about it just come, they are top weekends and we always have a ball. The track on saturday is one way in and the same way out, so if at any time you dont want to continue you can park and go the rest of the way in another vehicle and we can pick yours up on the way back. I hope you decide to come, meeting new members is what these weekends are truly about. Matt

hi ace
look thanks alot for the invite but we talked and talked about it, and we are going to decline, it's not because of the recovery gear and stuff it's a multitude of things including the allocation of our time to important stuff we need to get done. but hopefully if you have another one soon and by the end of jan we should have most things semi sorted and also have everything we need to particpate.
then we can come over and have you ozzies show us how the off roading is done out here.........then i can film it and send it back to england.
thanks again

Yes mate Mt Airley is still the plan, but the weather has turned nasty (bloody Murphy i am going to shoot him when i find him- stinking hot weather an no rain for weeks, then we want to go up Mt Airley and it starts raining) it hasnt really rained so to say, the clouds are just hanging around and dropping that occasional annoying misty crap. But as of now I still plan to go up providing the weather stays good. Also dont forget there is a $5/vehicle charge now to go up. Matt

OK, the other starter is confirmed (at this stage) for Saturday. He'll meet us at your place Ace (I've given him directions), I might even see him on Bells Line of Road as he'll probably come that way.
He's done Mt Airley years ago but this time he'll be in the company Disco3.

Sounds good, i am keen to see the D3 in the rough stuff, the Mt Airley track should be a good challenge. Lets hope the rain holds off. It has been raining, but only that misty crap, nothing to actually wet the ground. With any luck it will stay this cool and be sunny. Matt

I've just had word that there's been a fair bit of rain your way that might affect the Mt Airley run.
Is it possible for you to contact the owner to see if the track is still open ?

I spoke to him a while ago, and he said as long as there hasnt been really heavy rain the day before or on the day of the trip he is ok with us going up there. There has been a bit of rain here today (and some during the week, but nothing i would call heavy) but it was barely enough to settle the dust. I will ring him in the morning before we head up just to check, if it is sunny tomorrow there wont be a problem. Matt

I am sure you will have left by now, but from crookwell to oberon i am not sure. But dont go to lithgow from oberon that is the long way. Go down the main street of oberon, from the big round about, then turn left at the shell servo and head towards Tarana. Follow this road for 21km, it comes to a T-intersection, turn right, and about 10km or so you come into Tarana, you then come to another T-intersection in town, turn right again and you will pass the pub on your left, after the pub the road takes a sharp right, directly after this you will see a left turn on your left (obviously) take this and it takes you under a train bridge. Follow this road (not sure of the distance) but a fair way along you will come to a right turn, onto dirt, dont take this one take the next, the first one is a dead end. There will be a house with a shed on the corner of the intersection. Follow this road and it comes out on the main highway between lithgow and bathurst, turn right onto the highway and this will take you to lithgow. Once you pass the Wallerawang turn off take the first right and that is my road, you know the rest. Matt

Well Sub000 and arived at 5:30 am on staurday after suffering 1 puncture and umpteen sessions of overheating. We did about 130km having to stop ever 30-50 km to bleed and fill the water  . 8:30 am saw us having the tyre repaired as as the temperature was behaving we set out with everyone for MT airly(airley?). Truck over heated on the way and again when we got there. My CB also refused to work  . We had to abandone the truck for that trek.
Back at aces we pulled half the hoses of to get to the
thermostat and bingo it wasn't opening even when boiled over the stove. Tony drilled around the insides of the thermostat and we riped it out and put everything back together. We also changed the cap for the old one I had that won't hold pressure. I took the truck for a run into lithgow and back while not letting the revs drop below 3000 rpm and everything was as cool as an igloo. Oil pressure was up to so Yay we were mobile again.
She hasn't used a drop of water since 8)
My top radiator pipe also has a worn bit from the bracket it sits on so will need replacing ASAP
Magic bent his steering on sunday when trying to fly and tony's rangie kept failing to proceed until we replaced the coil for the second time as well as a few other bits.
P.S. I the D3's keep embarrasing us all with their ease off road we might have to ban them. Wow they walk up and down anything!

Hi guys, it certainly was a top weekend, as usual. Magic's steering is fine, but the rear end of the camry he hit on the way home isnt, not a mark on the bullbar, but the back end of the camry is a bit worse for wear.
I havent loaded my photos yet because i dont even bother doing it from home, it takes as long to load 10 photos at school as it does one at home, so i will have a run to school this week to load them up. I spent all of today forming up some concreting for my grandfather at a block of flats he manages. Gotta poor it tomorrow.
I will do the trip report one day this week, probably when i upload the photos.
Thanks again to all that made the trip over, i gather you all enjoyed yourself. The next one will be a while off yet, but there will be plenty of notice. Matt

Geoff from Getabout joined us for the day in his DiscoII.
He had hit a large hole a couple of weeks earlier & destroyed the O/S/F tyre. It appears that the damper mounting bracket on the chassis has cracked then & the extra stress from last weekend finally finished it off.
I've managed to recover 10 more photos from my last disc so they're now up https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ .
Ace's Disco was unscathed, can't say the same for Tony's RR though (at least it's running a lot better now thanks to Johnno  ).

10th January 2006, 12:22 PM
The DiscoII is owned by Geoff from Getabout 4WD Adventures & the Disco3 is a Trivett Co car brought along by Peter.
Both only came for the Mt Airly run on Saturday.
Both cars did the drive pretty easily as the track wasn't too hard. The mudflaps were removed on the D3 for the day just for a bit of extra clearance & the D2 has a slight lift.
Hopefully, I should be able to entice Peter out on another trip in the D3 https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ .

Hi Andrew, there series II/III you are refering to is a bit of a hybrid, its actually on a 110 chassis with the rear section cut of to make the departure angle better, the wheelbase is still 110in though.
I dont know to much about magic other than he hit the rear end of another car in traffic, the disco is fine. I think, on the next BBQ we all need to encourage him to drink less beer and slow down he is going to hurt someone, and i dont want people not coming to the BBQ's because of other peoples reckless behaviour.
Zook, not a scrap of panel damage mate, i got away pretty well. Matt

I did try to upload them on monday, but the photos wouldnt load. The box that you add the photos to and then click upload just kept going to page can not be displayed and the little popup that tell you the progress wouldnt go away. I left one for half an hour and not one photo up loaded. Will try again tomorrow. Matt

Top pics, lads.
I am assumimg that this is Matt's Discovery.
But there is one question for the last photo.
On the rear axle left side there is a distinct wet spot where the shocker is attatched to the diff housing.
Have you popped or damaged a shocker already?
Cheers,
Lyndon.

Ok......wet spot is the closest to the exhaust pipe. Rest of underbelly of vehicle is bone dry. 8O
Would it not be more likely that the wet spot in question would actually be the first to dry or anywhere the exhaust is in close contact?
Looks to me like a popped shocker and the oil has seeped down and soaked the bottom shocker mount.
Cheers,
Lyndon.

BTW Good luck with the promotion.
Is this at the servo or at school ?https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ .

Nah its at school  , Stacey is now working at the servo aswell, after the girl who was working weekends with me turned up 3 and a half hours late to replace me on sunday. I rang George, the boss, and he had to drive back from sydney just incase she didnt turn up at all. She was shocked to arrive to george unloading his car. Needless to say she got the sack.
Will let you know how the promotion thing goes. Matt
