Hello All,

Yes I know this is a Land Rover forum ... It is just that I am working in total isolation and my dog and fish never give me a reply - well not one that I can understand after I ask them a question. So I appeal to a greater collective mind.

I would like some assistance to come up with labels for a division between some important themes/categories within my research. So far I have come up with a number of possible alternatives - none of which I am entirely happy with. These are:

"Dominant Four" and "Lesser Four" - however, this division seems to reduce the significance of the last four when they are still really important - they are just more static.

Hmmmm - perhaps "Dynamic Four" and "Static Four"

Other thoughts are Dynamic Four and Influenced Four.

I do not want to get into Dominant Four and Passive Four ...

Here is the context
In my study I am trying to determine a two part classification for some stuff that is happening. I have 21 themes or categories. From these I determined that there were 8 that had a significant amount of interaction between them and when one theme/category was being described one or more of the others would also be referred to. These 8 are classified as 8 "Core Categories". They are the "Big Eight" out of the 21.

The further I have dug into my analysis I have been forming the realisation within these 8 core themes/categories there is a possible hierarchy. There are four categories/themes that have intense interactions between them and they have a dynamic inter-relationship with each other. The consequence of this relationship is that the product of the four themes/categories seem to directly influence the outcomes within the remain four themes/categories. These remaining four are still significant their importance has not been diminished.

My issue is what can I call the division? Can you come up with some suggestions that do not have certain negative connotations attached to them. For example Dominant and Passive seems like a role play game with leather clothing...

I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Kind Regards
Lionel

following on from your dynamic and static classification, would Active Four and Reactive Four work?

It doesn't imply any degradation of the importance of the Reactive four, only that their dependence is subject to the Active four, ie. reacting to the conditions of the active group .. as this appears to be the situation.

Primary and secondary

G'day Loneranger,

Yep - trouble is I have already used "Primary" and "Secondary" Antecedents - used that choice up already in the very same chapter.

G'day AK83,

I have been going over your suggestion for a while as I am working on the research tome. I think you have hit the nail on the head. As much as I do not like Bernie Skinner & Co and their white lab-coated, clipboard holding, watch-keeping Behaviourists the two examples "fit".. Much better than Dominant and Submissive [bighmmm]

Hmmm. I might give it a bit of a tweak though and go "Dynamic" and "Reactive"

Thanks for that [thumbsupbig]

Kind Regards
Lionel

Hello All,

Thank you for all the replies and for your thoughts. I have just performed a Find and Replace search and made adjustments to two chapters. Therefore - cross fingers things are pretty much locked in for the duration. Again thank you for your contributions they were greatly appreciated.

It has just hit 11:00 pm here and I shutting up shop for the night!

I was going to suggest the Cardnial points/ Ordinal Points to lend a navigational air to the whole shebang.
The ordinal points being defined by their relation to the cardinal points could (?) be a helpful concept...

Probably too late...
