G'day and welcome to Shingleback off road!
I'm a small Aussie business with a passion for the Aussie bush, Land Rovers and well made quality 4wd accessories that are strong, practical and engineered thinking outside the square. I've just finished designing, developing and building what I believe is the only custom fitted heavy duty plastic sill tank for a Defender 130 on the planet, and it rocks, and it's for sale!
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/03/670.jpg
The tanks are made in Beechworth from Roto moulded linear low density polyethylene, diesel grade, and are between 7-9mm thick. Being roto moulded the plastic is stress relieved and they are completely seamless meaning they are extremely strong.
Features include;
stronger and lighter than equivalent 2mm steel tank, weighs 17kg
Has a much better shape, is tapered up from chassis for max clearance and conforms to the contours better to still have a capacity of 95L with 86 L useable.
Never rust or crack mounts, even aluminised steel can rust on the welded seams
very low chance of condensation
Large 2" filler with three 1/2" breathers for rapid filling even with a quick flow pump
can be used for diesel or water (will use a food grade plastic for water)
comes fitted with brass inserts from 1/4" BSP to 2" BSP
can access both the radius arm and trailing arm nuts
is fitted with a drain plug for easy draining
100% Australian designed and made
As there are many different ways people like to rig up their fuel tanks, for now I'm offering just the tank and all the brackets/straps/bolts to fit to your defender, you to supply all other fittings, hoses etc.
Price for 130 sill tank with brackets/straps/bolts = $790.00
optional VDO sender fitted and pressure tested + $110.00
optional brass elbow with pick up tube fitted + $30.00

Future plans are for both drivers and passenger side sill tanks for 90, 110, and 130. Other water tanks possible also, including under the rear seat in a 130. Will see how it goes, thanks for looking,
Cheers Andrew, 0400 124456.

I am also really keen for the 110. Be great to support an Aussie design and add to my fuel storage. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the interest, if only it was a 110! As you can appreciate the whole process took some time being the very first of a kind in the world. I knew it would be a good thing but wanted to test the whole concept on my own vehicle first, just happens we have a 130. Now that I'm more than happy with the concept and design, all's I need now is some confidence that I will actually sell some tanks before I make other moulds. We have put a lot of time, energy, money into this first tank, way more than ideal. All the hard works been done in regards to the design and development, I simply just need to make it about 17" shorter, but it is still several thousand dollars just to make the mould. Give me about a month and I could have it made. Just putting it out there, but if I could get enough people (say 20) willing to lay down a deposit I would start production asap, what do you think? Once I had the numbers, about a month you would have your tank?

Seeing that you only have a 130 (like me) you need to now focus all your attention on making a left hand sill tank..
just saying [biggrin]

I will sign up for LH and RH for 110, happy to pay deposit when you get enough numbers.
What sort of timeframe to develop moulds and produce tanks??

Thanks for the support weeds.
I totally understand people won't want to lay down a deposit until they know we have the numbers, so how's the best way to do this? Can we set a a list or chart for people to fill in only if they are willing to pay a deposit once we have the numbers? Can be tricky, will have to rely on peoples word that they will pay once we have the numbers, but will be the quickest way to get started.
Timeframe to build a mould and produce tanks? about a month.
Cheers, Andrew.

Look at the 90, loads sold world wide from 80s to present. All owners want more capacity and there is one spot that has not been used that is free on every model from TD/v8 to tdci. The passenger side rear wheel arch!
See this:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/03/628.jpg
Mirror something like that to the left hand side, align the filler so it can be filled from behind the number plate (flip down, very tidy) and place the outlet to the rear. Great for a water tank!
Here is example of hiding in/outlet with a flip down number plate
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/03/629.jpg
You can see below on the right hand side implementation by equip, they are not using space towards the top of the arch or flat up against the outer panels, due to inline placement of the tank between factory filler and main tank. Placed on the left side you can fill the space out entirely with the filler at the top going out behind number plate.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/03/630.jpg
As a water tank the outlet would go to a tap on rear cross member. As a fuel tank you run a transfer pumped line across rear cross member to main filler.
I'll take a water tank please, 😁

Just wondering, but what capacity would the 110 be?
Would the capacity be the same for both sides of the car?
I assume if u decided to upgrade to a later model 110, that u could remove the tank from your old defender and install in a later model Defender (say a Defender PUMA)? Is this possible?
As a person that will probably want to upgrade my '95 Defender to a later model at some point down the road, knowing that I can pull the LR tank and re-install it in a later one would help me make up my mind.....
Also, knowing next to nothing about the fuel lines in the later model Defender vs the Tdi300 versions, is there much difference? I'm assuming there would be as one is CRD version and the other is an old mechanical version ???

My suggestion is start a new thread here in the vendors section for the proposed 110 units.
Have a poll for LHFuel/RHFuel/LHWater/RH/Water so we can see how the numbers are going.
Pick a deposit price and ask members to post what unit/s they want.
Have a cut of date for expressions of interest and see if the numbers stack up.
Once done put a link to the deposit thread in the 110 pinnacle that folk have been looking at.
I'll slip you a PM too on some other thoughts.

Hi Rob, the capacity for a 110 would be about 75 litres on drivers side and about 10 litres less on the passenger side due to the battery box.
And yes they will fit all models of Defenders no problems.
Cheers, Andrew.

What about crowd funding?

What about crowd funding?
Yes, that's basically what I had in mind. if people were confident they could put up money and be guaranteed to either get a tank or worst case get their money back, I think more would support it. Is the quickest way for me to get cracking on the different models. If anyone has experience with "kickstarter" or similar programs or crowd funding, please let me know. I think the catch for me is, it will cost me about 10% of money raised. Still worth a look. keep the ideas comming, Cheers, Andrew.

10% ummm
It's a niche items and I have found most defender drivers are of good character and would go through with purchased if indicated they would.

Yes I hear what you're saying. we just need to Russell up the numbers. At least everyone can see how the 130 tank came out so they know what to expect.

I thought I'd register my interest for left and right sill diesel tanks for my 90. I'm thinking it may be while but if any other 90 owners put their interest down, it may push it along as bit.

Got a few more 130 tanks moulded, they came out very good. Now we just need a few more 130 owners to actually buy one!

Yes they do, I'm just happy they don't make them for Land Rovers! They only do main tank replacement for common vehicles, and are over a grand each.

There was an update the order day either in the 110 thread or Facebook.
Andrew indicated the RH side would be good for under the XMAS tree.
A number of us paid a deposit in advance, Andrew didn't quite get the numbers to swing straight onto it but it seems he is underway now as he measured up a 110 the other day.

I spoke to him the other day about a tank for my 130....he said he is going was going to mould a few more 130's this week before modifying the mould for the 110 tank run. Work is afoot.
I will drop in on Saturday morning (heading further south) to catch up with him about my tank...can't wait! Should be ready to take home with me on my return trip 7 days later.

Aren't fillers facing the rear of the vehicle illegal now? Some 'safety' rubbish....
