View Full Version : Who wants shingleback sill tank for a 110?

Shingleback
10th March 2017, 10:34 PM
Ok, since I've offered the 130 sill tank for sale there seems to be a fair bit of interest in a sill tank for a 110. I have always planned to make a tank for the whole defender range and still hope to. it costs several thousand dollars to develop a mould and I simply cannot do another one straight away, unless I could have enough people (20) willing to pay a deposit for a tank in which case I could start ASAP.

So let's use this thread for people to indicate if they are willing to pay a deposit for a tank once we reach 20.
Let's have a time of the end of April to get to 20.
Once we get to 20 then pay a deposit of $150.00
Then I can start building the mould, and about 6 weeks later you will get your tank.

So please only say that you want one if you will pay the deposit, otherwise it won't be fair on others.

Hopefully this poll works, just indicate if you would like a LH or RH tank. They both can be either diesel or water.

Let's build some tanks!

Cheers, Andrew.

If you need numbers at the end of the month I could tweak
things to make a rh happen but was hoping to defer till late in the year.

Thanks Kyle, you did well to beat weeds to be the first!

And sorry forgot to clear up that the total price for the 110 will be the same as the 130 being $790.00.

I know it's only been a few days, but of all the people who expressed interest in the 130 while I was developing it, I've sold just the one tank, to a local bloke not even on the forum! I've done all the hard work creating a great tank, so come on you 130 owners, your turn!!

Cheers, Andrew.

Hi,
Is there general information from the earlier 130 version I can check out?

For example:
- Does it at all interfere with clearance in any way?
- Does it fit with APT or other rock sliders? (or any other underbody protection)
- How much time and/or cost is involved in setting up the tanks with tubes, mounting and any other bits (for fuel & water)
- Expected lifetime of the plastic/product

Cheers - it looks really good

I would have to have a look at them, but I'm sure they could be modified easily if needed. I could do it no problems, Cheers, Andrew.

Hi, yes check out my thread in the projects and tutorials section for lots of info on the 130 tank.

Ive designed the tanks to taper up and away from the chassis with a nice curved edge so they don't interfere with clearance.

APT rock sliders shouldn't be a problem. And even if any rock sliders don't fit they can be easily modified.

Cost to set up depends on what set up you choose. Can be very simple or fancy. I do plan to offer a complete kit if there is a need but for now it's easier for me to let you decided how to set it up, so can't really give an accurate dollar figure sorry.

Expected lifetime is a bit hard to give an accurate answer, but rest assured that it's a very long time! For example the poly water tanks and ploy pipe last well over 30 years out in the sun, and they are pretty much the same type of polyethylene.

Cheers, Andrew

Good news, we got to 20! But only if we add up all the polls including 90 and perentie..

Been getting interest for 110 from Gumtree and Fb too.

Working on quicker and easier way to make moulds.

So come on everyone, let's sign up and make it happen!

Shingleback

Are you going to make the tanks for the 110?

Yes I will, but the question is when. Firstly thanks to those who voted in the poll, but we still haven't reached 20 in any one tank yet. I've had good interest from many people but turning that interest into commitment is the challenge. Sorry it's taking so long but the best way to speed things up is for more votes!

I'm working on other things at the moment but haven't forgotten the 110 tanks, so thanks for your patience everyone. I still believe the tanks are an excellent product and believe that once a handful of the 110 tanks get out there they will sell quite well. To be realistic, unless we get more votes, I'll have the 110 done by the end of the year. Ready for the Land Rover 70th anniversary in 2018. Will keep you all posted.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Thanks Mate, I've made moulds from sheet steel also but the ally is much softer so easier to form into nice rounded shapes. And the ally has better heat distribution which gives better uniform thickness of the plastic. Cheers, Andrew.

G'day all, we didn't get to 20 tanks but I'm willing to build them anyway as I believe that once they are out there they will sell. I know that it's a big ask for people to cough up money for something that isn't even made yet, and I thank those that have indicated they will support me. So, for all those who were willing to pay me a deposit to build the tanks, now is the time please! I'm ready to order the materials and measure up a 110 and are confident that the tanks will be available by the end of the year.

Deposit of $150 for total cost of $790 per tank. I will honor this price for anyone who is prepared to pay the deposit, but once the first batch is done the price will have to go up a bit. So those that help me get started get the best price :)

Please send me an email shinglebackoffroad@gmail.com and I will send you an invoice for your tank deposit.

You can also check out my new website, which still needs a bit of info added but is at Shingleback Off Road 4WD accessories | Shingleback Rack (http://www.shinglebackoffroad.com/)

I will make the RH side first as it was slightly more popular, LH to follow soon after.

Remember, only those that pay the deposit will get the introductory price of $790.

Sorry it's taken so long and thanks again for your support,

Cheers,

Andrew.

Hi All, and thanks for the quick response so far.

Thought I'd share these questions and answers in bold.

Capacity of the RHS fuel tank? Wont know exactly until it's finished, but about 70 liters, should be more.
What will be included? - The mounting brackets, hose, Sender Unit, etc? All the mounting brackets are included, brass inserts ready for you to fit whatever fittings you like. There will also be provision for a fuel sender unit, but up to you to supply all fittings and hoses. Might get a kit together eventually.
How will it be filled? Same existing filler or a separate filler? However you like. I use a separate filler, and it comes with provision for big 12mm breather hoses to allow fast filling from hi flow truck pumps.
how will it be plumbed in and how will the fuel be transferred into the main tank? However you like. There are many different ways of setting it up. Some have a transfer pump but if you have a low tec diesel I prefer a simple fuel selector valve to switch between tanks.
How thick are the wall of the tanks? About 8mm thick on average, thicker in the corners. Very tough.
Is it up to the continual peppering from sharp rocks & stones that u get from outback roads? Yes, so far so good. No signs of damage from our recent trip up the oodnadatta track. It is easy enough to fit mud flaps or stone guards if concerned.
When 4WDriving a rocky track and u come down on a large rock, can it handle this? Yes, far better than steel as it wont cave in like a beer can. See my demo video of me driving over a tank with my 130.

And other features are that it won't rust, less condensation, is a better shape, nothing is lower than the chassis, tapers up from the chassis, is Aussie made and are awesome!

Cheers,

Andrew

Tanks all look great, ready to go [emoji106] we cut one in half to make sure they are cooked properly and to check the wall thickness. These tanks are super tough, over 9mm thick [emoji123][emoji6]

just tweaking the mounting brackets to allow for the different defender models, will start sending them out by the end of the week, cheers https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/12/146.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/12/147.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/12/148.jpg

Hi. Are the poly tanks any good for petrol storage? I am wondering if they would fit under a Series 3 109 Stage 1 v8?

I've just caught up with this thread, again. (really need to worl out to turn notifications on)
If you have a Left Hand tank for a 110, please let me know. I'm not sure which side you made first.

ahh, nuts.

Thanks for the heads up, looking at the photos, I can see they are RH now.

any idea on a timeframe for LH? I require one within the next 3 months otherwise I'll have to start looking at other options.

Cheers.

It’d be awesome if Andrew could go straight into making the LH Sill as I reckon he is developed a good product and considering the likes of ARB are now going with poly for all new long range tanks.

I think issues could be demand v time, money and effort in developing the mould, keeping it affordable, getting a return on his investment and do actual paying jobs to support his family.

From memory if 20 (I would have to search to confirm) buyers committed to purchasing a tank Andrew would prioritize the development of the mould.

For the RH tank I believe 10 people committed by paying a deposit get the mould underway, pretty sure more than 10 indicated they would purchase one.....hopefully Andrew has been flooded with orders which will give him confidence in developing the LH Tank.

I’m certainly up to supporting the LH tank as I did for the RH tank and laying a deposit.

Hopefully my RH tank is close to being shipped.

Andrew's email re my RH tank, indicated he was tanking deposits for a LH tank. I will be getting one eventually, unfortunately current back log of projects leaves me unable to commit.

Huh, I best go read my emails as I didn’t see the option for committing.

Finally got around to installing the Shingleback Sill Tank in my Defender 110. Just got to get around to filling it up to see what it holds....

I ended up installing a 2nd Filler just below the Passengers Door but using a 50mm size filler made it a bit more harder due to the short piece of hose required and the angles involved to mate them up, but I eventually got it to fit.... but I'm a bit concerned on the pressure I need to use to get the hose & fittings to mate up, so I'll be watching for any signs of fatigue on the filling point and the joint into the tank.... Time will tell though.... If I could have found a more flexible hose I think it would have made it easier but I went with what I could find....

Decided to go with a simple setup of just using a facet pump feeding back into the Main Tanks Breather hose as well as teeing the Aux Tank Breather hose into the Main Tank too. I decide not to install a Fuel gauge at this stage and will just switch the facet on and hopefully rely on the time it takes to pump 70ltrs across which should be around 30mins or so.....

Hmmm... had some problems with my initial fill of the sill tank... Wouldn't let me fill over 50ltrs which I now believe was due to fuel sitting in the aux tank's Breather hoses and preventing the tank from breathing. Will have to look into solving that soon....

Andrew,
I'd be up for the same arrangement as last time for the passenger's side tank.

Cheers GlenI asked him about this recently in terms of the when of it all.

He said closer to Christmas, he is working on a few things that are taking precedent due to lower volume numbers of this but he is working on it from what he said!

G'day fellow Landy lovers! Sorry, long time no chat. To say I've been busy is an understatement!!

The good news is that I have started the LHS tank... I have previously said that I will have it done by Christmas, BUT things have changed some what and this is no longer possible. (admittedly I didn't say which Christmas :)

I comes down to the simple fact that our business has grown very quickly with the mountain bike racks and we are working flat out just keeping up, which is a good problem to have as it's paying the bills. With the defender tanks, we still haven't come close to covering our costs of the RHS tanks so it isn't feasible to stop making things that make us money to start something that has only cost us time and money. In hindsight I should've stuck to my plan and only made the RHS when I had 20 deposits.

For those who haven't seen out bike racks to see why I've been busy check them out here;
Shingleback Rack - Shingleback Off Road (http://www.shinglebackoffroad.com/shingleback-rack/)

When I started the Defender tanks the bike racks weren't a thing, but they are now in a big way. We are currently finalising a better manufacturing process locally, so I will have more time for other products in the coming months.

I still believe that when I have both the RHS and LHS tanks to offer I will hopefully sell enough to get some return, so sorry again for taking so long, but I am still planning to finish the LHS, I just don't want to give a timeline as I've learnt that things can change in a big way.

I know it's crap that I've taken so long, I feel bad for dragging it out but I hope you all understand.

Cheers,

Andrew

Having seen both the tanks and bike racks in the flesh, Andy really makes quality stuff. I encourage anyone thinking about them to give them a go.

Could I ask for anyone’s feedback on purchasing this take for a water tank? I read people’s endorsements from when they’ve seen them, but I’d appreciate hearing from anyone that has purchased and used this as a water tank.

I’m looking for a water tank for showers and cleaning etc.

Thanks in advance.

They seem to be doing the job for fuel, I’m about to install mine.

I have my fingers crossed that the passenger side will be developed so I can run water.

Request for 110 sill tank.

Request for 110 sill tank.

I don't believe Andrew visits the site much due to him being very busy (his bike racks are giving him more business these days) ... U might be best to contact him via Facebook/Instagram, etc or send him a direct pm.

I believe he may have some still in stock... I'm still waiting for the LHS 110 versions but I can't see that happening for quite some time

Yeah I emailed him recently about the LHS and he said Christmas, but he said that last year haha. He has apparently started the mould though.

I believe he still has some stock of the rhs, his email address is best, should be on his website.
