View Full Version : Getting Rid of PocketNews on Android Phones

Magically PocketNews appeared on my phone (Samsung S4) one day - it is a subscibed Telstra News that sends you News SMS for 30c a go. It is not a normal app and cannot be removed via the usual App removal processes.
I want it off my phone as the icon sits next to other apps I use on a regular basis and can be accidently tapped - even when you are unsubscribed accidently tapping the icon resubscibes you.
Now Telstra says it will stop on 1 April but I doubt the icon will be removed. I have looked at Telstra's Crowd site and even though the questions ask the same as I have - how to remove it the answers are all about unsubscribing - and I as I said if unsubscribed you only have to tap the icon and you are subscribed again.
So does anyone know how to get this annoying app off my phone.
Thanks

Apparently it's on the telstra sim card and not the device so can't be deleted.
I went into the application manager and clicked on force stop.
The other option is to change service providers. You can take your number to another provider.
If you're being charged there is also the ACMA. They deal with telcos.
Can you create a folder and move the app into the folder?

I just successfully moved the app into the tools folder. Couldn't work out how to create a folder on purpose- have only done that by accident.

Thanks but that does not work for me - I have moved it to a Junk Folder but when I look at the Apps Icon it is still there as well as the Junk Folder - I want to get it out of the pages under the Apps Icon - that is where I access my apps.

Ahh that's the limit of my knowledge unfortunately. Surely we must have some Gen Y on here who might know!?!?

If you hold your finger on the app. icon does it come up with several options including Delete?
That's all I've got.

You can stop it sending notifications in the notification section of settings

Thanks - no delete, only create folder (which I have tried), info and cancel (which is only cancel the action of putting the icon on the home page)

Unfortunately notifications are greyed out so notifications cannot be turned off - though force stop is an option but as soon as you accidently hit the icon it starts up again. I have been able to get it to stop working but any slip of the finger activates it again and I would just like it off the phone. It would seem this is not actually possible. As mentioned the only way is to change service provider and get a new sim card.
Hopefully when Telstra deactives the app on 1 April it will disappear but I am sure I just saw a big fat pig fly past.
Thanks

Can you move the icon to another page and ignore it?

App Icons under the Apps Icon cannot be moved - the order is done by the Android OS. If I had it as an icon on the phone home pages where I have the apps that I actually use then yes but I do not have it listed there.
I am surprised that Telstra have been allowed to insert this piece of money making crap into sim cards without giving customers to the option to accept or reject this.
Cheers
