I am thinking of fitting a HF Radio into the D4, are there any guys with a D3/D4 that have fitted one into their car, I haven't looked at any brand specificly, but the Barretts seem good value, any info on how good or bad these radios are would help also.

Also any dimentions to give me an idea where I can put it in the D4 would be great, so far under the driver/passenger seat seems the best place.

I would like an Icom 7100 mounted under the front passenger seat, or where the rear A/C blower unit would normally sit. I would then also like to have the remote head either windscreen mounted or possibly down near the gear lever.

My father Graeme may be able to give you dimensions of his 7100

Only one issue with that, I have rear air, I'll give him a call though.

Redback.
I have a small GME unit with remote head controls.
It is mounted right up under the dash above the steering Colum.
There is a sort of flat panel under there with slots in it, I let the head sit in the rubber lined tray thingy in front of the gear lever.
The GME unit is fairly small & light though.

Are you considering a set for use with a service such as VKS737 where you pay a fee to use the service on a few difference frequencies or for an amateur radio for which a licence is required but gives you access to several bands of frequencies and output power dependent on the licence class?

Nowadays why not purchase a Sat phone?
They have become more affordable and the service price cheaper.
Satellite Telephones from $449, Satellite Phone Sales, Plans and accessories - Thuraya, Iridium, Globalstar, Inmarsat (https://www.satphonesales.com.au/?gclid=CjwKEAjwtbPGBRDhoLaqn6HknWsSJABR-o5saTXDALEeDqIBPsophdYc-8w_CNZOIA4gy34gp4TO3hoCbbHw_wcB)

A mate of mine had HF and has ditched it for a Sat phone.

Thank you Michael for all your help, and great to meet you and chat too, the back seats in our are solid, don't have that feature you have, must be specific to the 5 seater.

No mobile through VKS Graeme.

Yes we looked into a Sat phone, and with the deal for this HF it works out a lot cheaper, plus we have a SPOT and EPIRB along with us that we carry all the time anyway, the SPOT is really good for location and sending messages to let them know where we are and we are OK.

So after a chat with Michael we will go ahead with the HF, if it is still for sale that is.

I have a UHF installed in my car for mobile use, but as I consider HF to be mainly for use in remote area emergencies, I carry the transceiver and a suitable antenna as cargo, and would set them up if required in an emergency, or for the occasional net as a test.
