G`day ,

GM 5L40E filter stalk seals the part of the filter that fits into the trans body .

The filter has what are called 2 red seals and 1 white spacer/seal .

Every time i walk past the one in the shed i ponder the question , do the seals stack on top of each other or should there be a space between the 2 red seals ?

The filter i walk past has the white at the bottom a red sitting on top of the white and the other red up near the top of the neck of the spout .

The top red is fixed fast to its position and has not been moved when the filter was withdrawn .

Both the red seals have grooves around their outside like some seals have on their inside .

The bottom red seals groves are mostly still intact .

The top red seals grooves are virtually gone and is almost a smooth surface . ( I presume from the filter moving about ) .

I fitted the new filter with the seals all one on top of the other with no spaces .

The car has only done about 6000 km since the filter swap and it`s not doing anything it shouldn`t that i`m aware of .

For your information it drained just under 7 ltrs and it filled just under 7 ltrs .

I bought 12 ltrs because i had read i should get 2 changes but i think that may have only been for an oil change and not with the filter as well .

If you missed it my question is about the seals .

Thanks Mario ,

as there`s no actual factory guide to the filter change , i thought it possible that the top seal may be super glued on or similar .

When i think about it , it would be about the only way to fit the top seal high on the stalk .

It would automatically want to slide down to the second red which will sit on the white .

Once the filter is pushed home there is no way of knowing where the seals are but i would expect they would be low on the stalk and even if the filter was pulled down again a little way and pushed up again i can`t see how the top seal would be high .

The top of the top red seal is a measured 5mm from the end of the stalk and as i typed earlier doesn`t move , the second red moves up and down easily on the stalk .

Your 3rd pic is of a narrow sump the other 2 with the white are the deeper sump like the RR .

Cheers

G`day , yep that would be right the BMW cars have the narrow sump and the X5 has the same deeper sump as RR.

With known things i check RR and BMW , like the brakes on pre update are BMW as far as i can work out .

We don't stock them due to pricing and lack of enquiries,
Since they are a GM transmission you could probably pick them up cheap from Holden. Doing a google on GM5L40E filters I came across this, it lists a Holden part number
Automatic Transmission Filter Kit Holden Commodore 5 Speed 5L40E WCTK100 RTK65 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Automatic-Transmission-Filter-Kit-Holden-Commodore-5-Speed-5L40E-WCTK100-RTK65/281202988328?_trksid=p2385738.c100677.m4598&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D20160908110712%26meid%3Dbd5f3cf0b505464ba2c b9417e7830251%26pid%3D100677%26rk%3D10%26rkt%3D17% 26sd%3D221307299450)

G`day , as long as you check you could use it .

The link shows the differences , though yours shows the holden with a white it will possibly have the shorter stay and lack other bits that the RR type use .

I know JC says to use the holden one . I used the oil he suggested but not the filter .

The middle one in the link is the RR one .

On a Whim i bought one of the $10.45 holden ones to have a look at . ( it was on special 55 cents off )

It has no markings on it but it looks the same as the middle one in the link .

Which looks the same as the one i took out and looks the same as the one i put in .

No way of knowing about the actual filter part but the body is right .
