For the benefit of folks here both rear passenger doors on my 2012 110 defender are now working perfectly.
RHS Door - wiring loom from door pillar to solenoid replaced with genuine part (cost about $50). Big THANKS to AULRO member Disco Mick for the hint, I started poking about with the multimeter and found the faulty wiring quick enough.
LHS Door - Plastic cliplink to lock mechanism failed, replaced with genuine part (about $40 for pack of 10). note that original clips plastic and replacement part metal. Seems LR know the plastic ones are not up to scratch. Have some spare clips I'm willing to part with if anyone ends up in the same boat.
Learning experiences - The clips on the door trim are super fragile, suggest use a proper door trim remover (forked shaped thing) and not a screwdriver as I broke a clip on each door despite best efforts to be careful.
