Has anyone found a source for the plunger rod, 218381, washer, 242109 and spring, 58702, for a '55 series 1? Mine are shot and while I have found repo buttons, can't find the other bits anywhere. Can't work out why mine are shot, as everything else in the hand brake mechanism is fine, but they are, actually the spring and washer are gone completely, so maybe someone has had it apart before.

Before you spend any money make sure yours is actually the original S1 handbrake lever. S1and S2 look similar except the S2 is longer. You can use a S2 assembly but you won't be able to remove the floor without removing the handbrake lever first. The length of the tube ( the part the rod sits in ) on a S1 is about 285mm, on a S2 about 317mm..W.

Thank you for that information, I shall check mine in the morning. With all the other strange stuff I'm finding nothing would surprise me anymore.

I had to repair, or replace, every component on the hand-brake for my 80".

The plunger rod, from memory, is about 4mm diameter which I sourced from a piece of weldmesh. The plunger spring came from my collection of useful springs; if you find one that is too long, grind it to break it and then make a seat by grinding it on a bench grinder to a red-heat, on one end. Even the plunger knob was so rusty, I decided to make a new one on the lathe.

The teeth on the ratchet were built up with weld and filed to profile; the holes in the pawl and all the other levers were welded with a MIG and then re-drilled. The yoke on the pull-rod was made from new, as the inside of the flanges had worn badly.

So the good news is that everything except the springs can be re-conditioned or fabricated,

Cheers Charlie
