View Full Version : Td5 Disco II - oily film covering tailgate

Was hoping someone could help me locate the source of an oily film that has recently coated the rear end of my 2003 Td5 Disco II (auto); searched the forums with no luck. Vehicle has done 55,000km. Car was thoroughly washed after a big trip and then re-fuelled. When I washed I did spray the underside a bit with a hose. In the last two days I have noticed a wet patch on the driveway under the rear of the car and twice now after short trips I have noticed that the rear windscreen and tailgate have been covered in an oily film. Something wrong with the diesel fuel? Any ideas?

Hi and welcome paulr,

Whereabouts are you located?

The interrogation begins:

Does the wet patch smell like diesel?

Is it located under the filler?

Has it been hot where you are?

Was the tank filled to the brim?

Sorry no answers yet but I think that fuel overflow or leakage could be a cause of the film.

I think you're onto something there - came back from Dargo High Plains (VIC) when it was hovering around 40 deg Cel and then filled-up close to home. Yes, I think (pretty sure!) I did overfill at the Mobil station just outside Melbourne. Washed car at home (Melbourne) and then noticed problem the following day - maybe residual fuel has coated the underside and is being spray atomised when driving. Problem seems persistent though. Have washed tailgate and will investigate source of leak. Does smell like diesel. I guess the good thing though is it doesn't sound like something more serious - problem will right itself? I checked the inside of the exhaust pipe and it's dry so that's some relief. I'll check around the filler - vapour hose has come loose perhaps?

By the way, does diesel damage duco the same way petrol does?

Thanks a lot guys. Have picked up quite a few things on this forum - beats getting advice from the local dealer! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Not that I have noticed on white duco

As for the issue.

See how you go in the future though. There could still be a problem.

Let us know https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Looks like there still is a problem! Cleaned up the oily film off the tailgate and noticed oily specks on the tailgate window as I was driving. Arrived back home after 15 minutes and noticed drops of diesel dripping from the left hand side of the fuel tank (looking from the rear). Fuel is running down onto the fuel tank so I now suspect there is a problem with the fuel pump or hoses - makes sense because there is no leak onto the ground when the car is stationary. The tank is only half full. Is this a common problem with Disco II Td5? :?

no....its not common....it should be something simple.....

there should be a plate on the floor above the fuel pump which is held in
by about 8 screws....remove this and you should be able to see what is
leaking.....

There was a Land Rover recall for a fuel hose problem:

Thanks guys. I've got one month of warranty left so I'm going to get the dealer to fix it under warranty! I'm sure now it's the pump discharge hose although at the moment I'm obviously getting enough fuel through to the engine to keep it running. Funny though, when I bought the car 2nd-hand about 18 months ago I contacted L/R Aust and they said all the recall notices had been attended to including D169 (someone had told me to check all the recall notices on the web).

it may be a different problem other than the recall campaign.....

if its under warranty then dont lift a finger other than to dial the dealer
to book it in.....

I don't think it is the out put line there is 1 for each injector. Mine was leaking around the sea inside the tank that goes around the pump $23.00
The trick is there is also a ring that holds the pump and seal in. You have to replace this ring if you undo it doesn't cost much.

Fixed my TD5 fuel leak

I find that an oily spatter on the rear end just about always comes from a leak underneath.

Transfer case is a goodie, not uncommon and leaves a nice spray.
ATF, the D2's sometimes crack these pipes also - this one brings a light smell through the AC also.
If the spatter is only very slight, then also check the pinion seals, but I doubt.

Agree -- small amount of oil goes along way!

Is your fuel pump any noiser than usual? I had one of the tongues on the main fuel line connector (spring loaded) get clogged up with mud and grit and was not making a firm connection, with the result being a fine mist of diesel going everywhere.

It was very noticeable under the bonnet and all over the back windscreen. Apart from the smell, the fuel pump was wailing like a ban-shee.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Had the car repaired under warranty - 100% now! Fuel line chaffing resulting in a leak was the problem. According to the dealer the fuel line that chaffed was not very far from the one that was the subject of a recall (D169); he mentioned that the dealership have seen this other problem several times now. Looks like chaffing (design issue) of several of those fuel lines (not sure of the set-up of fuel lines around the fuel tank in the Td5) is a potential issue.

I (naively) sent an email to Landrover subtely suggesting that they reimburse me for the half-tank of fuel I lost on the driveway and road. I also mentioned that the leaking diesel had done irreparable damage to my bitumen driveway - basically dissolves it! Standard reply from them "sorry for the inconvenience" bit and that was about it. I don't think diesel stains can be removed from bitumen.

Cheers. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
