Hi all, anyone have a surplus working aircon compressor (for the right price) for a Discovery 93 V8? Mine has run a bearing, (or bent the shaft) I think, and is being very unco-operative, which is just what you need here, where it's 4000 degrees every day and night.
Cheers guys, GQ

Hey Graham
what day did it get to 4000 deg, you'll have to stop sleeping in the car to stay cool, get the aircon put in the house. Anway you won't have needed it for the past couple of days with the rain and cooolness we have had. Now i can't wait for those warm days to return and the 150% humidity.
Thats my funny, seeing you hven't had any replies to that one, check the brand and model of your compressor ( most are japanese) then take a drive out to Hillside wreckers( on the Kyogle Road) they are reasonable people there, if they haven't got one the same take a walk around the cars in the yard and see what you can find. I spoke to the bloke that runs the place ages ago, about getting a compressor and condensor etc of a jap car to put into the batmobile, it has an aircon control head but nothing else, he was pretty good as far as suggestions go.
While they don't wreck a lot of discoverys, actually none. there may be a late model vehicle there that has the same compressor or similar.

Graham,
Has the aircon lost its gas?
The most common thing to happen is that the seal on the input shaft fails. I have never heard of one bending a shaft.
While I have not had personal experience , there are plenty of posts around to suggest that if it is noisy it could be the bearing on the clutch.
Why not take it to an aircon place for a diagnosis.
You know the cheapest part of restoring an aircon is the compressor. I think a Sanden new would be under $400 but the receiver dryer and the gassing is what costs an extra $300-400, so you are up for that anyway.
I think it is false economy to go for a wreckers special, as they all do the seal sooner or later, then you are up for another reciver dryer and gas.

Hi John, one day we'll catch, how's next later nxt week? And to Phil, here's the story, I bought this Disco from and old Landy lover near Casino. He said he aircon was a bit of a worry 3 y ago. And even gave me a bearing kit, figuring that one day this will need replacing. He has several Series LR's. I can't find anyone locally who will do the fix. The aircon works fine at idle but as soon as there is a load on, the aircon pulley grinds to a halt, with much screaming from the belt. Observing the shaft end, the nut spins out of round. So (assuming) the inner shaft workings are worn, but the system is good. However I need to degas before removing the Sanden 7477 aircon comp and pulling it to bits, which doesn't phase me, but, time is, as always not my compatriot in the repair department. I'm mr fixit 'round here an there are many other 'issues'. JohnE, a trip to Hllside, where i have been many times before, is on the cards, but I havent seen any Lrs out there. (Went thru this fun an games with the recently departed ED Falcon, it more about mounting brackets and fitting etc).
Phil, I'd invite yo for a beer at the Pioneer tav at Wollongbar next friday nite but Mona Vale is a bit far south, however. 6pm J Elfes? I'll be there. Just find the leaky aqua Disco 1 with the raw bonnet.
Cheers, GQ

Sorry John, didn't answer the question, Sat 17.12.05, 10am. I was hauling up to Perry's Hill from Ballina with the trailer and tonne or so of sand. Overheated, yet another hose let go, and the oil pressure sensor switch dropped its guts as well. Pardon my typing, I'm using a laptop, with a ikkky keyboard.GQ

Not that infamous Hill again, didn't the heater core go bung up there too?
Sorry I forgot you also possessed old classics too, and that you would have visited the Hillside mob.
Phill, I know there are varying opinions re s/hand stuff from wreckers,my experiences have been positive, a few years ago the a/c comp on the pajero ground to a halt, just seized. I went out to 4wd wreckers at Revesby, Marigold St I think,, and got an identical unit. It was only $100.
Nobody would touch the old one, the aircon guy near my place at the time was great, I did all the work at his workshop, needed new receiver and sensors, all he did was gas and oil it up. The best 300 I ever spent.
Up until a month ago when I sold the paj the aircon was still working well and not a sign of wear.
Graham, done 6pm Wollongbar tavern, Friday.
