Fuel Pressure Regulator Leak

I noticed last Thursday diesel leaking from the rear RHS of the engine, just where the fuel pressure regulator is. I've worked on one of these before and what a royal pain in the arse it is. Even with the inlet manifold removed to make access easier. I phoned a around and got quotes from $750 to $967, I'm gearing up fore the day lost and the expense. Fast Freddie suhggests I look at the FPR. So I removed the acoustic cover and had a look. The fuel was pouring out of the pipe that runs between the FPR and the head. I jiggled the pipe, it was loose. I tightened up the nut and the leak stopped. A good lesson. Have a look, you may save yourself time and money.

Btw: this pipe becomes brittle over time due to the engine heat soak. If it's leaking at the head end, it leaks onto the alternator.

Easy fix on mine cut that rubber hose out and replace with some HP fuel hose a couple of clamps either side [thumbsupbig]

Bohica i had the same happen to my Td5 last week i had just washed the motor and box to find oil leaks and took i for a run to dry off, get back home diesel over everything including the tail gate.
The previous owner had it replaced recently, I assume yours was the top fitting how did you go tightening the tube nut what did you use, i'm thinking of buying a set of Crows Feet spanners as i would like a bit more nip on the fitting.
I think the last mechanic used straight spanners like mine that's why it come loose.

The hose from the fpr to the front of the head on mine was so hard that when I flexed it, it snapped like a pretzel !

Pretty good run for 12yrs I reckon.

Yes it was the top fitting one that connects to the head. I used a 15mm spanner, (Bunnings I think) maybe 1/8th of a turn then rotate spanner by 180 degrees along long axis and tighted up another 1/8 and repeat.



I've given my car a wash and I can still smell the deisel. The tail gate, window etc was filthy. I guess therre is a huge amount, now acting as an anti corrosion layer on the bottom of the car./

Fluids, The poor hose hasn't much chance of survival where it's situated, looks like some new FPR's come with the hose which would eliminate one possible cause for a breakdown.

Bohica, I did the same as you tightening the fitting but will still buy a Crowsfoot spanner set as i think they will be handy on the TD5.

Agree'd, it is what it is ... but in all fairness, 12yrs years old and maybe 175k what do you expect ... it's a hose, not a pipe. Not worth complaining about.

Like I said. Pretty happy with 12years. Changed it out before it failed as the new FPR included the new hose anyways, and the FPR was starting to develop a slow weep .... preventative maintenance.
