Searched for a disco fo 6months with hlep from ACE. Took 3 to a mechanic for a check over and finally found the one which needed work.
2000 ES disco
1)new water housing and pump.
2)new tyres $360 each.
3)new back breaks.
4)front door catch needed a spot weld.
5) Minor service
All came to $1600 which was carried out by the owner before I handed over the cash
$22500

After reading the fourums changed all the fluid on the car myself once my manual arrived on disk from AULRO.

All going sweet untill this morning when i noticed a green puddle under chantel (thats what i named her) on closer insperction thought it was coming from the water pump housing.
Straight on the phone to the mechanic who said to bring her down.
Up on the hoist out with a touch to find the leak.

8O 8O 8O
Head gasket gone
how much :?: :?:
$1500 not as much as i was expecting so a bit of good news.
Drive home 20km car starting to feel strange pull her over flat tyre. Get home after a change of tyre, cancel my 4wd course on the weekend.
Jump in the shower no hot water inspect the hotwater system need a new one
Great start to the new year
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ could not find a cry emotion.
Hoping for some good luck

Sounds like the same old story; as soon as you fix one thing, the next weakest link goes.

Don't worry mate, once you're finished you'll have a top car and you'll know exactly whats been fixed and the quality of repair.

Hi Welshman!
you dont say if its a V8 or the other,,
guessing by the size of the bill I gather its a rattler though,,,

they say bad luck comes in 3's,,

I thinks thats your full lot for 2006. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I think its great to get them all out of the way early,,

thinking this through though,, Jamo's got it right,, not only have you fixed a lot of common complaints (at someone else expence  ) you've now established some sort of rappor with the mechanic, who will or will not help you in the future.

good Landy Mechanics are like gold and must be appreciated when found,,

and as we all say here at AULRO--

where are the PICS!!!!

That's bad luck boyo

But with ownership comes the development of character and the gaining of knowledge https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

My rubicon was a blown head gasket.

As for the photo's have you checked out the FAQ section?

Do you have an album in our gallery?

If not in the meantime email the photos to me and I will post them for you: eno_atoi@yahoo.com.au

I might add that I have owned my Disco for 7 years now and I don't feel the need to trade down.

I'm not professing to be an expert on V8s, but it seems a bit odd in my experience for a blown head gasket to leak coolant externally enough to leave a puddle.

Does the engine have a misfire on cold starts ?

Its quite common on a V8 to leak water. It comes out between the head and block at either end, as thats where the water passages are between block and head.
Thats how my 3.9 went. Caused by a slight warp in head, up at the ends.

yep mine is leaking at both ends of the block front battery side and back opposite corner.
She is only dripping about an egg cup full once she is left standing. Besides the green tear left on the floor she runs fine.

Hi

Yep the tyres are a problem I have just shed one and but for the kindness of Craig would be up for $390 to get me over say 6 months before replacing them with Coopers or something similar.

Nice to see the the Toyo extricating themselves from trouble , presumably they did?

Once of the nicest experiences I had was snatching a Pajero off Cable Beach with my Suzuki after the owners wife said they were hoping for something bigger to come along and help them!

And yes they hadn't let the tyres down, weren't sure whether the tide was going out or coming in, people are scary sometimes.

The first thing I did when we bought a 4WD was go on a course, then joined a club and really learnt about it.

regards

harry

Hi Welshman,

I wouldn't worry too much about $360 tyres.

I just ordered a replacement Wrangler for the D3 and it's costing $450!!!!!!!

good looking truck
i am a bit surprised that you need to spend dosh on the engine,
but for that truck i think when its right you will love it
if not, we can do a swap.

Thats the first pic i have seen Welshman and i must say i agree with the others it looks bloody good. I dont know what it is but all the landy products look great with 18in or 19in alloys. You did well, get the engine problem sorted, which is just one of those things, and you will be very happy with your purchase, the Disco really is a top vehicle.

To save your expensive tyres get yourself a cheap set of steel rims and get some off road tyres, its a pain swapping and changing rims everytime you want to go off road but you dont need to be scared of shredding $360 on rocks etc when you are off road. Matt

I havent heard of the head problems, maybe some of the others have. Is the mechanic a Land Rover specialist or a general mechanic?

You will get alot out of the training course. I have been trying to get to one of the NSW LROC training courses but every time Marcos is sick or we havent got any spare cash. I hope to get to one this year. I managed to get to one day of the advanced one, i didnt learn much in terms of driving techniques as the tracks we go on on the BBQ weekends are much harder, but i leanrt alot about recovery techniques. R U with HBF I think I would cry, to see my girl on her side. Will do my course first then go on one of your trips. Is the trips for Landys only ??

The mechanic I am with is Wilf & Chambers in Osbornepark he came recomended on this site has been great. His work shop had 3 cars on the hoist all that were worth more than my house, jags and landrovers. Said that he would resit the valves, and machine the heads down. Hope to get her back on Wednesday. Overheard him talking to another customer about a new core for a radiator $600 then a new head gaskit and machined head so things could be worse for me.
Mechanics must take courses in breaking bad news like doctors not
:!: "Your head gasket is gone !" me https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ waiting for price.

Hi Welshman
When we go out,its usually a mix of WA members of AULRO and the "Black Stump" http//www.bslras.com/
We are a top bunch of LANDYLOVERS,and yes other breeds do come along,we have had our Mitsi Trytoo,Landcruisers,Honda CRV's,Hilux,Navara, all are basically welcome,Im sure you would enjoy yourself.
AND if its too tough in your mind there is no pressure for you to try, there is always an easier way around.
