I have a td5 Defender and wanted to know what fuel people prefer to use and what gets you the best economy. I threw in some 7eleven special diesel the other day, but also use Caltex vortex and BP ultimate. Haven't done any comparisons yet on mileage for different fuels but thought someone else may have.

I would say the best diesel is the pump that says diesel and not unleaded! But seriously I'm not sure if there is much/any difference between them but i tend to try stick with BP ultimate - i do pass a caltex servo near home that's always about 10-15 cents cheaper than everyone else but often wonder is their diesel "legit"

All diesel is the same! The supposed higher grade diesels are just normal old diesel with an anti foaming agent added.
There was a thread on here about it a while back

I use what ever station is the cheapest!
I would think all would be similar? Not like unleaded that has different octane levels.
While travelling in Europe I noticed they had pumps for different types of diesel like we have unleaded. So I would think there is different quality diesels but maybe due to demand not sold in Australia?

In my experience, any diesel fuel supplied from "South" is pretty good, except perhaps for "Puma".

Over the years I have found that the diesel supplied via Darwin provides more litres/100. I suspect that because it comes from SE Asian refineries and a different crude, it does not contain as many Kilo Joules/Kilogram as the stuff supplied from South. Traveling South, a fill at Alice or Cairns improved economy by at least 1ltr/100.

Using Puma diesel also has resulted in measurable reduced economy.

Did once mention to NRMA when I lived down there, and asked if they would conduct a proper Bombe experiment with various brands and sources of diesel. Guess what?????

Cheers

I have a mate that drives a tanker (for Petrogas) that does deliveries around Melb and Vic.
They have two fuel depots(Mobil and Shell) that they fill, at depending on demand/availability.

They deliver to all manner of stores even tho the fuel itself can come from the Shell/Mobil refineries.

They do many BPs, Mobil/711s and basically all of the independents.
Like one reply said, they're all basically the same diesel.

That goes for diesel only. Petrol is an unknown tho, he does deliver some petrol(not as much) and petrol is only supplied to independent retailers(or bulk customers).
That is, he's only delivered Mobil petrol to Mobil/Seven Eleven stores and Shell Petrol to Shell stations but could deliver either Mobil or Shell to an independent.

Independents could consist of Liberty, or Costco, etc .. and the true(very few) real indies with no brand attachment at all.
But he doesn't deliver the Shell/Mobil petrol to BP or Caltex for example.

I stopped worrying about the quality of diesel once he explained it all and now just try to find or wait for the cheapest without going out of my way.

I have no idea what goes on around the rest of the country tho.

Yep, diesel is diesel. All comes out of either Mobil or Viva (Shell) here in Vic, and similar in other startes. Probably more important is avoiding the very few ancient servos that have crap in their tanks. Stick to the newer servos (anything newer than 20 years) and you'll be right.
