Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd make a post about a recent experience I had with the LH primary turbo.

I purchased the car from Sydney in Feb 2017 with 94K on it, and on the drive to Brisbane I could hear a siren like whistle coming from the engine, slightly more noticeable on the LHS. No black or blue smoke, just a constant siren under load, started at around 1500rpm and diminished around 2500rpm.

Got it to the independent specialist up here and they confirmed it was a LH primary turbo. It was a body off job, around 5K with the new turbo being a genuine Garrett valued around 3K. The noise is now gone.

Overall the car is very clean and well maintained, and during my test drives and pre purchase inspection no noises from the turbo were found. The car had been on 24K service intervals, done at dealers, I believe that this could be the culprit and as such have had an oil flush done and a new turbo oil feed line put on (also got the belts done while the body was off). I will now have it on 10K intervals.

Hope this info can help those with similar issues.

Chris

Did you have any other symptoms with the turbo? Lack of power or anything like that?

No, just the siren noise, no smoke, no lights or loss of performance

I have had other vehicles create a similar noise when there is a boost leak. Also check the EGR pipes to see if they are cracked and leaking or the intercooler could have developed a leak. All of these can create a whistle due to boost pressure.
